    Hei,
I am a ‘new user’ of this software and am trying to clip/copy a small selection of one JPEC picture and paste it into a certain position in another picture. I can’t find out how to do it in the Help menu … is it possible to do this?

You can do this in IrfanView, but not in a very sophisticated way. Look under Paste in the Help index, and you’ll find that what you can do is
      1. Select an area in Picture no.1 (drag with the mouse)
      2. Copy by using Ctrl+C, or Edit-Copy.
      3. Open Picture no.2
      4. Select an area in that picture
      5. Paste, using Ctrl+V or Edit-Paste.

The effect is to paste what you copied from Picture no. 1 into the area you selected in Picture no. 2, and the program resizes it if necessary. You must have made a selection in Picture no.2 before you paste, or the paste operation replaces the whole image.

If you want to do this in any serious sort of way, there is more powerful software available free – I would use GIMP.

      Open the “source” picture.
Select the part you want to copy by dragging a rectangle with the mouse.
Once you have released the mouse button, you can drag each of the edges of the selection rectangle.
Note the size of the selection rectangle in IrfanView’s title bar – the title bar will read like this:

Filename – IrfanView (Selection: left, top; width x height; aspect ratio)

Select Edit | Copy or press Ctrl+C.
      Open the “target” picture.
Select a rectangle with the mouse where you want to paste.
Once you have released the mouse button, you can drag each of the edges of the selection rectangle.
Make sure that it has the same size, or at least the same aspect ratio as the rectangle that you copied in the “source” picture.
Select Edit | Paste or press Ctrl+V.

(Or use Microsoft Paint – pasting is easier there )

Like Hans says, MS Paint is much easier for this kind of operation. It’s amazing what you can achieve with 2 instances of MS Paint running!

Thanks all … it never ceases to amaze me how much knowledge exists in the Woody camp.
