• ipconfig results?

    Hi,

    I have a Win XP Home machine that connects to the workgroup within our domain. It was fine yesterday, and today it will not connect to the network.

    My first reaction was to use ipconfig (hard to type when you have a bandaid on your right ring finger) but the result I get is “Windows IP Configuration”. I cannot seem to release, renew, flush or display any ip information.

    I have tried hard wiring the ip address, no luck. I have tried deleting the current network configuration, but that option is deleted. I have tried creating a second network connection, I get to wander through the wizard to make my selections, but no icon appears.

    I thought I would try reinstalling tcp/ip, but the uninstall option is greyed out. Yes, I am using and admin account.

    I hate it when things dont work properly. Can anyone help me?

      I suppose it’s possible that your NIC has gone to NIC heaven, but I don’t know. Did you open a CMD window when you ran the IPCONFIG command? When I run that command without parameters, it looks like the attachment (intentionally cropped). Did you NOT get the limited info below the identifying title? Just for the heck of it, try IPCONFIG /ALL and see what you get. There should be a lot more info provided. BTW, do you really have a domain in operation or was that a slip of the fingers? If it isn’t too much I would see if you can locate a replacement NIC to try.

      And, yes, you read right. There is a domain involved here, but it also contains a workgroup. I am new to this organisation where they have bought the last few laptops with XP Home ‘because it was cheaper’ and dont understand why they cant see all the resources on the domain.

      The machine in question has been able to connect to the workgroup in the past.

      I will follow up the issue of a different nic and let you know.

        Cables go bad – did you swap cables? Do you have activity lights on the NIC? Can you see the other end and are there activity lights there?

      Yes, I had checked all those things.

      I was able to get a Netgear card nic to use as a test, and I was connected to the network instantly. So it was a hardware failure.

      Thank you to those who posted suggestions. I really appreciate these forums as a source of information, knowledge and wisdom.

      What I have also found interersting in this exercise is that unless the laptop was under warranty, there was no way that fixing the hardware was going to be a cost effective solution. The machine is a Compaq Presario laptop bought as a refurbished machine and a 3 month warranty which had run out. I was strongly advised against trying to repair it with a replacement part. The cost of sending it to an authorised dealer (I am 500 kms from the nearest authorised dealer) and them replacing it with an appropriate item was not worth it – especially as I can get one of these Netgear cards for $60 or so. It destroys the lines and look of the machine, but I have no other choice.

        [/indent] Yup, one of the disadvantages of laptops in my opinion. But, glad you at least got a workaround solution. Not sure what you mean by the results or whether the card is configured optimally or not, so good luck with it.
