I charged my iPad (Gen 9 A13, 2 yrs old) prior to installing iPadOS 16.6.

It’s the first time I’ve ever seen this notification:

    ipad_charging

The ambient temperature is only 19°C – not hot at all – and my older iPhone SE2 hasn’t shown the same notification despite being charged at the same time.

The back of the iPad doesn’t feel hot at all… quite cool in fact.

It was resting on the closed lid of a Dell Latitude E7450 laptop… so I’m wondering if NFC affected its data.

(I’ve noticed that Dell Latitude E7450s turn themselves off if stacked with NFC transceivers above each other… so have learned to turn them around when not using them. I’ve also noticed that the same Dell Latitude E7450s turn themselves off if I rest my iPad against them… hence my query.)

I’m just interested, not concerned. Has anyone else ever seen this apparent overheating notification on an iDevice… or noticed any anomalies when in close proximity to NFC transceivers?

I have but it’s been when it’s hot.  I would totally shut down the device and turn it back on again.

Many thanks for your reply, Susan. My post was not well constructed. I should have posted:

Has anyone else ever seen this apparent overheating notification on an otherwise cool iDevice… or noticed any anomalies when in close proximity to NFC transceivers?

My iPad was cool to the touch (both sides) and the ambient temperature was low, inside and out.

I ignored the notification and installed iPadOS 16.6 anyway after moving the iPad away from any possible NFC interference… which is what I was wondering whether there’s some kind of data link that, for prolonged contact, may heat up an NFC chip and cause an iDevice notification. Or just a data misfunction…

I have 3 Dell Latitude E7450s (was 4, but 1 died so was cannibalised for parts) and the sudden shutdown issue (which Event Viewer doesn’t register) became apparent over a period of time. I can now trigger this more or less at will by juxtapositioning two laptops together.

I didn’t realise until preparing for this iPadOS update that the iPad’s NFC chip may also be affected by close proximity to other NFC chips.

IMO, it’s a weird anomaly… but ‘enquiring minds’ seek to know 🙂

Maybe a bit existential but neither iDevice nor Windows appear to provide logs of NFC communication… unless someone knows better. 🙂

I understood that it was cool.  I would still do a full restart.  Often after these rushed updates things need a full restart.

Yes, I did a couple of days ago on my iPhone 14 Pro Max while charging and updating apps.
I took the iPhone off the charger, waited a ~hour and resumed charging and updating.
I use Apple’s MagSafe for charging and the iPhone in in a rigid back case.

The notice has nothing to do with NFC.

Umm… isn’t MagSafe for an iPhone also wireless communication just EXACTLY like NFC?

Haven’t you just added weight to my hypothesis that it’s wireless chips overheating by prolonged connection that provoke the notification?

      Just saying…

      I haven’t checked MagSafe’s temperature.
This was the first notification I got in a year+ while always charging the same way at the same place with the same “NFC”.

I have also received such a notification after I upgraded to iPadOS 16.6 on my iPad Air 4th generation yesterday, while attempting to charge the device.

This is the first time I saw this notification. It may have been added in the 16.6 update. I had encountered the iPad stopping charging at 80% power before without seeing this notification.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

I had encountered the iPad stopping charging at 80%

Apple charges iPhone, iPad, watch to 80% to prolong battery life.
The charging process learn your habits and continue to charge to 100%.
For example : If you leave the device charging at night and you usually wake up at 7AM, the device will charge to 80%, stop charging, and continue to 100% before you wakeup.

On my iPad Air this is probably true. When this happens I can feel the iPad and the charger getting hot and that is probably why it stops charging. I charge the iPad Air using the USB-C charger provided in the box.

But I am not sure about that on my iPhones. I have quite a number of iPhones (some in active use, others not) in my possession. None of them shows this “stop charging at 80%” thing when I charged them (normally during the day). May be I missed the temporarily stop charging thing entirely. I only charge my iPhones using an old iPad charger (which provides more power than the small iPhone charger in the iPhone boxes).

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

This iPhone trick gives you an alert when your phone is fully charged

..Head to the Settings app, look for the Battery menu, and select Battery Health & Charging. Toggle on Optimized Battery Charging.

This is a key iPhone feature to enable if your charging routine is predictable. If you recharge overnight, for example, the iPhone will pick up your routine and always stop charging the battery when it reaches 80%. It will then finish charging right before you typically wake up, according to your alarm schedule…

..there is a way to get an alert when your phone reaches a full charge, thanks to the Automation feature inside the Shortcuts app. Here’s how to set it up:

Tap on the + symbol in the Automation tab
Tap the Create Personal Automation button
        Select the Battery Level option
Leave the Equals % opinion enable as you slide to 100% (or whatever level you might want it to be)
        Tap Next
        Tap Add Action
Search for Play Sound and/or Play Music. I’ve selected both of them
        Tap Next
        Disable Ask Before Running
        Tap Done..
