I’m considering purchasing an iPad mini in October for my birthday. I’ll wait until October just in case Apple refreshes the iPad mini lineup. I doubt the mini will get a refresh (they usually don’t often), but it never hurts to wait until the iPad announcement just in case.

My main goal for an iPad mini is to read textbooks. I have an iPad Pro and love it for my “work iPad”, and I plan to keep using it daily. It works great with the smart keyboard, Apple Pencil, AirPods Pro, etc. However, reading books on it is a chore since it is a little bulky for reading.

I had a chance to test out a Kindle Fire 8″ Tablet, and the size was nice, but the display is subpar from the iPad mini retina, the overall build quality is cheaper, and I wouldn’t be happy using Fire OS. I have Apple Juice running through my veins. 🙂

The iPad mini would run all my reading apps, plus I could put a few more school apps on it and a handful of apps as a backup tablet in case my iPad Pro went out and I needed a backup. The size would also be perfect for reading. Plus, I’d get a year of Apple TV+ for free, so I can enjoy Fraggle Rock for a year free without paying for Apple TV+.

The only issue I’m having so far are finding cases for it if I were to get one. Apple’s Smart Cover only protects the front, and the rest of their cases don’t look great either. I have a leather Pad and Quill case for my iPad Pro and love it. I don’t see any iPad mini cases from them.

Does anyone know of any other high-quality (preferably leather) iPad mini cases? A case that protects the front and back and has a folio/book design would be ideal. One that doesn’t block the buttons/ports too much either would be great.

      https://www.amazon.com/ZUGU-CASE-Protection-Secure-Magnetic/dp/B07S2TTV5C

This case looks like it matches up to your points of interest. Not sure what type of material it is. The ports are open access and as far as protection goes they claim it has an excellent protective barrier for drops and such. Fits iPad mini 4/5.

My wife just upgraded her iPad to the Mini-5.  She uses the JETech case which costs about $14 from Amazon.  It works well.

JetTech cases are decent. And the price is right. After posting the Zugu case link I then noticed the cost! Wow, yeah JetTech is more practical and from what Nathan listed as preferences for a case, your suggestion sounds like a good match.

I use Logitech Slim Combo Keyboard with my iPad 10.5″ Pro and love it.

Logitech has also iPad Mini Ultrathin Keyboard Folio :

        DUAL-VIEW STAND
The Ultrathin Keyboard Folio doubles as a dual-view stand that holds iPad mini in two ideal positions.
        – Upright with the keyboard exposed, iPad mini is at the perfect angle for typing.
        – Laying flat with the keyboard hidden, you can browse the web, listen to music or watch videos.
        – Integrated magnets dock iPad mini reassuringly into the typing mode viewing angle. Ideal for picking up iPad mini and roaming one-handed.

That looks great too. For my iPad Pro, I also have the Smart Keyboard.

For an iPad mini, I’d use it more for reading, so I may not need an external keyboard. I’m finding some nice looking leather cases on Jisoncase. I’ve used their cases in the past before going with Pad and Quill, and their cases are also good. I forgot they still made cases. 🙂

I finally ordered the iPad mini, plus I ordered a leather case from Jisoncase (I’ve used their cases before and have had great experience with them). I’ll give a more thorough review of the iPad mini once I’ve had a chance to use it more (I just received it Thursday). So far I love the smaller size for reading. I can easily read all of my school books no matter the eBook apps (so broader support than Amazon Kindle and far better hardware construction over Fire tablets), plus I can run PDF apps, note taking apps, use an Apple Pencil with it, and install other apps such as encyclopedia apps, phone book directory apps, etc. I can easily use this for both my schoolwork and when I need to quickly grab an iPad and look something up. One-handed use it great.
