..the update fixed a bug related to the Advanced Data Protection feature.
The bug prevented some users from enabling this option, which expands end-to-end encryption to a number of additional iCloud services, including iCloud device backups, Messages backups, and Photos.
Since this bug also affected Mac users, Apple released a similar fix with macOS 14.6.1. watchOS 10.6.1, however, fixes a bug that prevented access to Apple Fitness+..
This Cnet article says both versions of 17.6.1 address the Advanced Data Protection issue. So, if you’ve already installed the original 17.6.1, why install the re-release version? So far, it’s not appearing on my iPhone 13 anyway.

nor on my iPhone 14 or my iPad Air Gen 5, either.
Until I get the red dot on the Settings app signaling an available update, I’m not going to go look for it in Software Updates. I don’t really want to know. If Apple can’t seem to be able to justify this re-release, ie, why you need it if you already have 17.6.1, then I don’t need it.

..Re-release runs on all iPhones and iPads, but only available as OTA download for some
For most iPhones and iPads, the new iOS 17.6.1 update appears to have been released as an OTA download via the Software Update screen inside the Settings app.
However, it’s unclear whether devices will see the update if they already have the original 17.6.1 installed. It’s possible only devices running 17.6 or older will automatically see the new 17.6.1…

FDA approved Sleep Apnea for Apple watch 9, 10, Ultra 2
Apple Watch sleep apnea detection gets FDA approval
The US Food and Drug Administration Monday published approval for sleep apnea detection on the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Watch Ultra 2. The green light comes four days ahead of the Series 10’s September 20 release date.
The feature, announced at last week’s iPhone 16 event, will arrive as part of the imminent watchOS 11 release. Once enabled, it requires 10 nights of sleep tracking data spread out over a 30-day span to determine whether a user may have the condition. During that time, it also offers insights into nightly sleeping disturbances, utilizing the on-board accelerometer…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea
Sleep apnea, British English sleep apnoea or sleep apnœa, is a sleep-related breathing disorder in which repetitive pauses in breathing, periods of shallow breathing, or collapse of the upper airway during sleep results in poor ventilation and sleep disruption..
Estimating Breathing Disturbances and Sleep Apnea Risk from Apple Watch
Users can measure Breathing Disturbances during sleep tracking with Apple Watch
Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 (excluding Apple Watch SE) to better
understand interruptions in their respiratory patterns. Apple Watch also uses this
data in an algorithm that detects signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a common and treatable disorder that negatively impacts people’s health
and quality of life. Despite advances in public awareness about the importance of sleep,
most cases of sleep apnea remain undiagnosed. Apple Watch can track Breathing
Disturbances during sleep and provide notifications of possible sleep apnea if Breathing
Disturbances values reach a level associated with moderate to severe sleep apnea.
..This article describes the development and validation of
the Sleep Apnea Notification Feature. ..

When a major operating system upgrade is released (such as iOS 13), it is generally recommended to wait and install the update after its first minor update is released (in most cases, that would be a 0.1 update such as iOS 13.0.1, but it seems for iOS 13, Apple is folding such updates into iOS 13.1).

Apple Pulls HomePod Software 18.1 Beta 2 Following ‘Bricking’ Complaints
Apple on Monday seeded the second beta of HomePod software version 18.1 to developers for testing, but it has since pulled the beta.
Across the MacRumors Forums and X, some users complained that installing this beta on their HomePod mini resulted in the speaker going into a “bricked” state, meaning that it no longer functioned. A few users said they were eventually able to restore the HomePod mini using the Apple Configurator app on a Mac…
Apple is preparing an iOS 18.01 to fix 18.0 bugs. Question now is…install it or wait for 18.1? Neither iOS 18 nor Sequioa has anything I want or need to make my iPhone and iMac better IMO. Just give me security updates.

Apple is preparing an iOS 18.01 to fix 18.0 bugs. Question now is…install it or wait for 18.1?
That is exactly why many folks don’t install the first version of a new OS, but install the first scheduled revision to that OS version…many of the initial bugs have been worked out. 🙂
What’s the rush? Let the Guinea Pigs install 18.1
I am running iOS 18.1 beta2 (14 Pro Max), iPadOS 18.1 beta 2 (M2 iPad Pro), watchOS 11.1 beta 2 (Apple watch Ultra).
It just works.
The only issues I am hearing and reading about on iOS 18 has to do with Bluetooth and Carplay issues with some cars. Some folks have found a re-Pairing of the car and phone resolves the issue. Other report rebooting the phone fixes it.
Given the automotive forums traffic for two major brands of cars, it does not appear to be a large problem, but some individuals are having issues after the update. Whether it is the car, the Carplay connection (wired and/or wireless) or Bluetooth is not clear.
For me the only time I had even a tiny glitch, a deletion of the car from the phone and the iPhone from the car and re-PAIRING of the phone fixed it.
Apple pulls watchOS 11.1 beta 3 (dev) after users report frozen devices
Apple has pulled the watchOS 11 beta 3 update, according to Aaron Perris on X. The update was initially released to developers yesterday, but some users are having problems after installing the latest beta…
This is quite a large concern, especially given the fact that there’s no way for users to revert firmware without taking their Apple Watch to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, and having it sent to an off site repair facility…
* This the second time in 2 weeks that Apple pulls an update.

Hi Susan: Where do you stand on updating to iPadOS 18? Is it time yet?
18.1 is out today with AI.
In a week (or so) Apple will block downgrading to 18.0

Without an AI compatible phone, like my iPhone 13, not much here to be excited about. IMO
iPhone 13, 2019 iMac(SSD)
I wasn’t clear in my above post. My iPhone 13 is NOT an AI compatible phone for iOS 18 and now 18.1. What I would get in those updates leave me with features I didn’t ask for and don’t need. I did update to 17.7.1 yesterday for the security enhancements and fixes. As long as these phones continue to get these updates I may be satisfied with them as my status quo.

Apple stops signing iOS 18.0
If Apple stopped signing 18.0 on Oct 11 then why did 17.7.1 apparently come out after that? Seems like cart before the horse.
Is 17.7.1 safe to install? And if so then we wait for 18.1 to shake out?
Because iOS/iPadOS 18 is not compatible with some older devices and they have to stay on iOS/iPadOS 17 (and get updates to be secure). See AKB2000014 and #2713133.
There are also three versions of macOS (Ventura 13.7.1, Sonoma 14.7.1 and the new Sequoia 18.1) that also have updates because older devices don’t just stop getting updates when they can’t move on to the next version.

iOS 18.1.1 and iOS 17.7.2 were just released.
Apple “prominently” wants you to upgrade to iOS 18.1.1 if you are still on iOS 17.x (like me). If you don’t want to go to 18 yet (like me), make sure to scroll down the update screen and choose iOS 17.7.2 instead.
By the way, even though you can still choose to update to 17.7.2, after the update Apple will still try to pester you to upgrade to 18.1.1 on the update screen. iOS 17.7.2 is NO LONGER considered the latest version by Apple. I still remember a few days ago when iOS 17.7.1 is still considered the latest version when I checked updates even though iOS 18.1 is already released.
As 17.7.2 is no longer considered current, I am going to update to it as soon as possible, as I fear Apple will pull the update at any time and only offer iOS 18 pretty soon.
Personally I am going to stay on iOS 17.7.2 with my iPhones and iPad Air 4 for a while. I will not be going to iOS 18 until at least iOS 18.2 or later (except my new iPad Mini A17 which is already on iOS 18 when I got it).
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

* Patching security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited
It is unusual for the national news to mention software updates, but last night, 11/20/2024, network ABC on their 6:30 pm broadcast reported that Apple had issued a security alert and was urging customers to immediately update their phones to IOS 18.1.1.

iPhone 13, 2019 iMac(SSD)
I got today an iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB (upgrading from iPhone 14 Pro Max 256GB)
As I run beta versions and Apple didn’t allow transferring apps and data from an iOS device running higher (and beta) iOS version to a device with lower iOS version, upgrading was not easy requiring setting new device, downloading beta profile, updating iOS beta, erasing device and transferring settings apps and data.
Now, Apple removed the use of profiles (dev, beta) so the transfer started by transferring settings, than auto initiating downloading and installing iOS beta (18.2 beta3) on the new device, transferring all apps and data.
The process took 30 min.
There has been so much confusion of what version and when to update iPhone (IOS 17.x/18.x), at least for me, that I decided to “take the bull by the horns” and go all out for 18.1.1 (I know really bold!)
I always update through iTunes where I can use wired Ethernet, which makes me feel more secure, and I like seeing the step by step process. However, this time iTunes (yes latest version) would not offer to update, only backup. Your bad, Apple. My stress.
So I had to turn on my WIFI. Other than taking FOREVER, all went well for both my G5 and G4 phones. I did my usual checking calls and iMessages between phones and all good. Since a lot of complaints have been mentioned on Photo app I tried that. I don’t do much with photos other than taking one, displaying it, and downloading to my PC. So I had no problems with that other than having to take extra steps to see photos whereas before I was able to get a simple display list quickly.
I did not like that I had to take extra drill down steps to locate some apps such as iMessage, but I guess that come with more things to display on a screen.
So glad to get that done but all these confusing, massive updates on both Apple products and Microsoft products sure do use a lot of time each month. The tech snowball rolls on!!
G5 and G4 phones
Which devices are G4 and G5 iPhones ?
I hate new features to learn just to perform basic tasks when we were satisfied with the old.
Well stated. I agree. It can be so tiring, and what makes it worse is that it is not just one product. Every company whether Microsoft, Apple, or your local bank account web site keeps constantly changing their systems. I think every web site I use has in the last 5 years “revamped” their site – often requiring reregistering with new passwords and then a learning curve to use the new site. The new sites almost always add new layers that require “drilling down” to more obscure subsites to find what use to be at the top layer before.
I know, many of you are telling me, “change is the only constant”. I agree. I understand. It is just the new norm. The snowball rolls on larger and larger.
Which devices are G4 and G5 iPhones ?
Sorry. Typo. Have you ever gone to type 2 numbers such as 78 and typed 87?
Don’t know why that happens. However, I meant 4g and 5g.
Alex, I know you know what that is, but for those that don’t, 3g, 4g, 5g is the generation of the wireless technology, 5g being the better.
Google it for the many differences if anyone is interested, but when I bought my second iPhone the firmware included the 5g technology, basically faster and more secure than my older model that had 4g.
Other than taking FOREVER, all went well for both my G5 and G4 phones.
iOS updates require Apple devices connected to wi-fi, unless you use iTunes. You were updating connected to wi-fi not cellular and the FOREVER depends on your wi-fi speed, so 4G or 5G didn’t matter, and router to internet speed.
The FOREVER also depend of iPhone’s CPU, RAM, free space (the update backups everything during the processing stage as to restore in case of failed update)
My router is connected using 1Gb fiber optic and it takes 2 min OTA to download a full 7GB iOS version.
iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 allow usage of AirPods Pro 2 with latest Firmware as FCC approved clinical grade hearing aids. Hearing Test and Setup from iPhone or iPad. Also connect with Macs running macOS Sequoia 15.1
Fyi, on my ipad 8 Gen 32GB, have had a dickens of a time updating initial 17.6.2, all variations of 17 since. Storage full by o/s. was fine on 16.7.5. It of course won’t take 18, nor do I want it. Cleared off ALL stock apple apps, incl Facetime etc.Only one app on my device (news app-34mb), photos only 6GB: (My icloud/bup is a mere 8GB). Still get this.
As the hog of ios o/s declines my storage further, I pass along how I manage to upgrade.
OTA (only way to stay put): when I see preparing, then ‘failed, need more storage’, I go into settings>general>iphone storage, and delete the downloaded update file. Restart iPad, then try again. For some reason, that works! I still get ‘not enough storage’ on 2nd go, but it swiftly moves into install. Hope this helps someone. Should have stayed on ios 16.7.5, no problems with storage then. Apple support of no help, couldn’t figure it out since 17. PS “update” says only 3 Gb’s or 200 mg, yet don’t be fooled. And yes, I pay for icloud storage, lots of room!
Storage full by o/s
I don’t have an iPad so probably should not put in my 2 cents.
However, it looks like your photos are using half your storage space so why not offload photos to a flash or a large usb drive?
Also on my Windows there is a clean disk option that gets rid on temporary files and old update files used in updating the o/s. Your antivirus software may also have a disk clean function.
Thx but pls reread my post: my pics are only 6GB of 32, my icloud backup is only 8G. No apps. Not even Apple apps. My query/post was why is ‘ios & System data ‘using 15 GB of storage. And to inform others in same boat how I managed to get it finally updated to 17.7.1.
Tesla released Apple watch app with its Holiday update.
my pics are only 6GB
I was going by the large red area so no way to tell exact amount of storage.
However, it is just a fact now that each update gets larger and larger so that incremental increase in the next level of update must have overflowed what was needed.
Amazing that you could do some update storage deletes and get past that. Only an Apple programmer could tell you why that worked.
If it were me I would move the 6 GBs of pics to a flash and see if the next update goes okay – just as a test. If still a problem then
why is ‘ios & System data ‘using 15 GB of storage
is a question only an Apple programmer can answer.
Several years ago I had a storage problem on my desktop and after several posts on Woody I found several huge backup files from various updates building up.
Let us know if your work around works on the next update.
Just “upgraded” an iPhone 13 to IOS 18. Email is not updating but hasn’t updated since Nov 24 (it’s now 12/5). I was going to try resetting the password but I confused as to where to do that in the iPhone. There’s a “Password” app now, that I’ve not seen before but I’m not sure that’s the right place to reset the email password. I use ATT.NET for email, not iCloud, so resetting the phone’s password (Apple password) won’t fix this ATT password.
@KingGeorgeN Just curious…why did you upgrade to iOS 18 when the iPhone 13 is not AI compatible and iOS 17.2.2 has the same security upgrades? That’s why I’m waiting for Susan to approve 18 and for what reasons. Thank you.

I want to hold off on 18.x for as long as possible because I don’t want to deal with all of the feature changes and I don’t need AI. I’m on 17.7.2. Will there be an update to 17.7.2 to address this malicious app?
For iPadOS 17.7.3:

Nothing listed for iOS 17.7.3
https://support.apple.com/en-us/100100

No change in information in the Apple link. Every vulnerability listed says “for iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad 6th generation”, nothing more. My iPad Air is 5th gen. Alas!
Will there be an update to 17.7.2 to address this malicious app?
It hasn’t been fixed in 17.7.3
* Has been fixed in macOS Sequoia 15.2, macOS Sonoma 14.7.2, macOS Ventura 13.7.2
This link in AKB2000014 for security content does not take you to iOS; it takes you to iPadOS.
Fact: There is no iOS 17.7.3 listed at https://support.apple.com/en-us/100100
Fact: My iPhone 14 is on 17.7.2 and is not offering 17.7.3, only 18.2.
The “iPad Air 3rd generation and later” models and the “iPad mini 5th generation or later” models mentioned in this AKB2000014 entry are not in the security content link.
Fact: My iPad Air 5 is on 17.7.2, but it does not tell me that 17.7.3 is available for download and installation. My only choice is 18.2, which I am still declining.
So iOS 18.2 has been released.
And just as I thought a little while back, Apple now no longer offers iOS /iPadOS 17.x on devices that can run iOS / iPadOS 18. My iPhone 13 / iPhone XR / iPhone SE 2 that are currently on iOS 17.7.2 now only offers iOS 18.2 for update, and my iPad Air 4 currently on iPadOS 17.7.2 now only offers iPadOS 18.2 for update.
So iOS 17.7.2 / iPadOS 17.7.2 were only offered for about 3 weeks (from November 19 to December 10) before it was superseded and no longer offered.
I am staying on iOS / iPadOS 17.7.2 for a while longer. I am not updating to iOS 18 until I can be reasonably certain updating won’t cause me significant issues, and I also do not want or need any “AI” (aka Apple Intelligence) features, at least not yet.
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

We’re in the same boat.
Why is it listed and not offered?
17.7.3 is an iPadOS update.
@Alex5723 According to this article in OSX Daily, there is an iOS 17.7.3
“Aside from iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, there are also releases for older iPhone and iPad versioned as iOS 17.7.3 and iPadOS 17.7.3, plus software updates for Mac including MacOS Sequoia 15.2″

iPhone 13, 2019 iMac(SSD)
This is Apple’s list, not a third party. https://support.apple.com/en-us/100100.
See that 17.7.3 is only for iPad.
I initially made the same mistake, b/c iOS and iPadOS have previously been together. But @WCHS brought it to my attention that this is only iPadOS (see above).
Still looking for iOS 17.7.3 like Obi-wan Kenobi looking for the planet Kamino in the library in Star Wars – Attack of the Clones..
Where the library attendant replied:
‘If it is not there: it simply does not exist!’
and no-one erased iOS 17.7.3 😉
