I have 2 iPhones. One is 4G. The other is 5G. After updating both to IOS 17.1.2 today, the text alert tone no longer sounds on receipt of a text message.

After a lot of trial and error, it seems the problem is only when both phones have iMessage turned on. If either phone has iMessage turned off, then the alert tone sounds.

Any one else having this weird problem or am I just jinxed?

Have you completely turned your iphone off and then back on again?

      1) Coming from a business, for example, 2FA, the tone sounds immediately when the text comes in with iMessage on.

      2)

Have you completely turned your iphone off and then back on again?

I powered completely down and up.

      A) With iMessage on the text comes through immediately but no text alert sound.

      B) Yesterday no sound only occurred with both phones with iMessage on. After todays power up I now have no sound if either phone has iMessage on.

      C) With both phones with iMessage off sound occurs immediately with text.

I will note when I update both phones I always do a back and forth with both text and phone calls to verify the update. Never had this problem before. It is odd it is only the sound affected and not the text itself.

This is something that probably no one would notice unless they did a back and forth test between 2 iPhones like I did, but it you are expecting an important text like a “package delivered” text, this could be important.

Just to note the bug is still there after the IOS 17.2.1 update.

I submitted a Feedback report on the Apple feedback website.

I think this is important because if you are expecting an important message from someone using iMessage and it comes to your phone silently you may not open the message until sometime later when you are about to send a message yourself and others might miss the message you send them.

I have the same problem on iPhone 13 iOS 17.2.1, but it has also been a problem on previous iOSs.  In my case, I think it’s related to  having iMessage on my iMac and Text Message Forwarding set up on the iPhone>Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding to my Mac. I get the sound alert on the Mac but not the phone.  Also, whether the Mac is in Sleep mode or not.  I read thru the Apple Forum comments and it shouldn’t be that convoluted settings wise.  I get the screen notification on the phone but not the sound.  On the Mac I get both.  Sounds like an Apple problem to me.  I believe my alert settings are correct on both devices.

IOS 17.2.1 and yes still occurring. I tried turning off and on notifications as suggested in the link you gave. I did turn phone off and on but did not go through the full reset and no change.

With my phones it is strictly an iMessage bug from 2 updates ago. If I have iMessage on no sound. If I have iMessage off, both phones have sound notification. From the link you gave me above looks like lots of people having the same problem.

I did receive a sound alert today on a SMS (non iMesssage) text. In my case, I do believe it has to do with Text Message Forwarding to my iMac and the timing as to which device picks up the text first.  I’m convinced all the relative alert settings are set correctly on both my iPhone and Mac.  In any event, Apple should know of this situation and be able to explain it.

I think they do know – look at the link in blue that Susan posted above on the Apple Community post. There are dozens of people reporting the same problem.

The only question is why this is still a bug through 2 updates? Seems like a simple piece of code to look at. “If iMessage indicator on Then check Notifications bits”. Then see if 2 updates ago a change was made to any of that code.

J9438…I don’t think it’s the same problem, ie, related to iOS17.2.1 or earlier.  Do you have iMessage alerts set up on any other Apple devices besides iPhones?  Many of the Apple Forum posts involve possible issues with Apple Watches conflicting with iPhones. Turning off alerts on Apple Watches may fix the problem for iPhone according to some posters.  In my case, I think the problem is forwarded messages to my Mac.  More often than not, I get the sound alert on the Mac and not the iPhone.  I want the alerts on the Mac and can live with only the screen notification on the phone if need be.  Not to say that this is still an Apple problem that needs to be fixed.

I only have an iPhone – no watch  or Mac – so from your and Alex’s comments

I do on my Apple Watch. It works

it seems to be just an iPhone alert problem.

I did receive a sound alert today on a SMS (non iMesssage) text

      And yes,
I also get the audio alert IF iMessage is turned off. When I was testing with this a few weeks ago I THINK ?? also I got an audio alert on 2fa’s coming from businesses even with iMessage turned on so possibly something that only affects personal phone to personal phone??

One other thing since iMessage encrpts whereas regular SMS does not maybe something to do with the encryption processing??

Installed IOS 17.3 today and still no alert tone on text messages on either of my iPhones 4g or 5g with iMessage turned on. I get alert tones fine if I turn off iMessage.

Installed IOS 17.3.1 today and still no tone if iMessage turned on. Works fine if off.

The link that Susan gave above in this post has 116 complaints at Apple discussions about this problem and this is about the fourth update with no fix.

There were a number of suggested fixes that seem to work for some but not others.

The reason this fix is so important is that without it you lose the text encryption that iMessage has in order to hear when important texts come in.

I just don’t understand why Apple cannot go back to the code prior to IOS 17.1.2 where the problem started  and see what they changed. We have this incredible phone with a million amazing features yet one simple feature cannot seem to be fixed. Unbelievable!
