How do you dload iphone update on Windows machine thru Itunes? Then, how do you get that onto your iphone? Special dongle? Are you even referring to a windows pc or a Mac?

          Thanks!

Itunes on Windows, Mac checks for iPhone updates when you connect and unlock the iPhone to your PC.
iTunes will download and install the updates.

Also notice on the screenshots: you can backup to your computer instead of the iCloud like @Alex5723 is doing.

The phone charging cable should have a standard USB connection on one end. Open iTunes (download from Apple, not MS Store) then plug in the iPhone to a USB port.

Ah too late, Downloaded it from ms store. Somehow, ITunes just disappeared, sort of. I had installed it long ago to use with my ipod nano 4th generation ! I could not find the installation files! There were a couple of folders in Music but that was it. The strangest thing, when I plugged in the nano, itunes started! So As its so old and I know I cannot replace the battery (drat! I like this thing) I didnt use it much of late- yrs? I kept it charged for the most part(went all the way down a couple times) but I digress. After getting an iphone a month ago and seeing that itunes was used to download updates for the IOS, I went to store and dl’d itunes so I could find it!. It likely just copied newest version over the installed one. In any case, it came form ms store. Possible to get to apple store from win10 machine? Uninstall current then go to apple store and I assume use apple id to log in? Am I any where close on this? I dont even get that I can download IOS and cloud stuff thru itunes!

              ANY advice? fergeddaboudit?

              thnx

              …and I dont have icloud active…..

iTunes is FREE. You don’t have to log into anything.
Google iTunes, download from the Apple link. You may have to choose an older version to get one not from MS Store.

If you have already installed the MS Store thing, see if it works first.

Aple.com offers itunes from ms store. Back out of thatand started itunes, plugged in iphone (and external ssd which is where I wan to back up to. No issues with that but itunes? wants a driver for phone- Do you know the URL for that driver? Itunes say get from windows update? I am paused thru mid june.

Also, do not see any option to back up…did I see alex say it AUTOMATICALLY STARTS BACKUP WHEN CONNECTED?????

The URL at the TOP of your screen shot :

              your-URL
Obviosly different from screen shot posted. In any event Itunes went ahead and backed up my iphone in the background  without so much as a may I. I accidentally stumble across the location. So now itunes and apple do what they will without telling me about it. Hate that. BTW I did find those screenshots alex posted after much poking and prodding . Same old itunes- esoterisc PIA and I do not want my bups on the computer but when I did find the places to make choices, only 2- cloud or PC. Since I dont have cloud active it went ahead and picked its own spot on my PC. HOPING I can just move the file to an external drive-any idea?

I guess apple.com knew a windows machine when it saw one and changed the download choice to windows store. nice huh?

Thanks for the help. I do get that backing up to PC saves GB on my IPHONE account/space on phone. Appreciate that bit of new know about.!

You must not have clicked on “iTunes for Windows.” (just above the black Microsoft logo)
The screen looks the same for me on both the Mac and Windows.
But here’s the direct download link.

              https://www.apple.com/za/itunes/download/

You are right- I clicked the URL above which was at the very top of your post. I figured it had to be there for a reason. I showed you the screenshot of that link. Now perhaps I completely misunderstood, but I thought you et al said I needed to get itunes from apple store not windows store.

I couldnt figure why you sent that link when you said try with what I had installed- I did and I’m pretty sure I posted as much. Yet the links cont’d so I assumed you meant I HAD to get a different sourced version of itunes. Nonsensical but we aren’t talking about anything that makes any sense- partly because of the method of communication and partly because of incomplete instructions(ie those screen shots from Alex didnt just pop up when I opened itunes-I had to dig DEEP to find them)  Another way of putting it is you wouldn’t want to walk into a Biochemistry lab and take the midterm cold turkey.

Thank you for all your patience and sharing. I do appreciate it very much. Clarity comes with details and I eventually will get there.

IF you are not disgusted and want to know I will post if I am successful.

You don’t get Windows Programs from the Apple Store. The Apple Store is for Apple products.

And I NEVER recommend anything from the Windows Store.

I know I am late to this thread…but curious. What version of Windows 10 do you have? I bet it is 1903 or 1909. I am still on 1809 and I have none of the problems described. You CANNOT install iTunes (or icloud which I know you don’t use but I do) from Microsoft store IF your version of Windows 10 is earlier than 1903. It is another good reason to remain on earlier versions of Windows 10 for as long as they are supported.

My computers run 24/7/365 and when I got on my Windows 10 pro 1809 computer a few days ago, in the morning, I was greeted with a popup from Apple sitting patiently on my screen. It wanted to install the latest iTunes for Windows 7.
This is how I get all Apple updates – Apple Software Update runs in my Windows Start Menu. This all changes whenever I upgrade to Windows 10 1903 as then the Apple software at the Microsoft store will be use I think and it will then be updates for Windows 10. I used to look forward to this but after reading this thread…I think I’d rather stay on Apple software for Windows 7 used on Windows 10 computers prior to 1903 version.

I appreciate your response and try to help. I am on vr 1909, and I get Itunes and it’s most recent update from within itunes. So unless itunes uses windows store…..

In any case, things got a little heated. Playing 20 ?’s with one and TMI from another only confused the issue. I STILL do not know why I only get ONE backup at a time-that is, it gets replaced by a newer one. I haven’t even turned it on but one time since then to check if I was storing the 10.5 update-yup.

I do not ever sync anything unless there is a GOOD reason for it. I have been using and hating itunes since i bought an ipod nano in ~2006. As I said I simply drag n drop I don’t get the need for LIBRARY collection…store things in multiple places? Anyway I figured how to make playlists and thats all. So noe I buy a PHONE and am having to use itunes to back-up(I like Macrium for that) and to update. I understand I can use icloud etc but in the interest of time and not using providers GB limit on my plan(would I be?) I try itunes. See above for screenshot of what appears to be 2 iphones connected and explanation about what happens when clicking on each.

All is well- I just have a 700 $ phone(fully paid for upfront)Locked into  and a flippin contract I didnt know about for 12 months w/ BOOST Mobil – all in the interest of saving $100 (apple price 800$) Should have used to 100 to upgrade to win10 pro on my other laptop!

Hope you are healthy amid this pandemic- I’ve been isolated since feb (w the wife o course 😉

              Thanks again for your interest!

Keeping the latest .IPWS files will let you restore (using iTunes) very fast.
I never updates iOS using iTunes. I always update OTA (3 Min. to download 4.5GB of 13.5 and 5 Min. for preparing and updating).

Also notice on the screenshots: you can backup to your computer instead of the iCloud like @Alex5723 is doing.

My default is iCloud as the iPhone/iPad.. automatically backup when charging and connected to my wi-fi network. Setting the backup to ‘Computer’ in iTunes, will disable iCloud backups (unless run manually).
I do backup to ‘Computer’ after each iOS update.

iTunes doesn’t backup behind your back if you don’t set auto sync….
If you backup to ‘Computer’ the iPhone/iPad.. backup files on Windows are at :

      C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\

You can of course copy the Backup file to an external SSD/HDD..drive. I do.

Can you tell me what it is this wants from me? or where I can find the driver?

There are two pieces of information there:
You can get the driver from Windows Update (It would be a good idea to have the phone plugged in when Windows Update runs).
OR you might be able to search the MS Catalog, OR you could use something like Google to give you information where to download the driver.
          AND
          You can eject the iPhone
by clicking the button (like you eject any USB device).

Not sure I’m following everything here correctly, but the location of your backup files if you’ve synced your iphone through iTunes on your PC, should be located in the Windows folder as noted by Alex above.

          • #2265165

Thank you Myst. I have found where the backup is and also learned it makes a difference where you get itunes from. The path is different for microsoft store and Iphone store. MS store=>c:\users\name\apple\mobilesync\backup) But perhaps you could answer for me…I want to manually backup when necessary- so if I select automatically sync when I plug in Iphone, Does that just sync music etc or does it start backup? Also, itunes automatically backed up Iphone last night unbeknownst to me- the updated install must have defaulted to sync? In any case, I had no idea WHERE it had backed up to so I finally found the settings for cloud or pc sync or manual etc and manually set it to backing up-again no idea where, when it had completed. Alex helped me find it (got me in the neighborhood) and it was in a path right next door so to speak, it was in a mobilesync folder  BUT There was only ONE backup file. Dated 22May. Then I look and a popout says changed 23may. It was a large file considering 64mb storage was all but empty- 6 photos. 187 mb- is that lg for an iphone 11? Anyway, I have backed this up 2x, once synced accidentally, and one manually. Only one file.

On quite a different note, I discovered a way to have itunes backup directly to an external ssd to preserve space on my pc and to protect it. Just have to hope I can reverse the process if I ever have to restore!

Where do the consecutive manual  backups GO? As I said I only have one. Will be updating IOS soon so I want to have good backups if required. It just seems each one should be dated separately.

Mebbe I should have stayed w/ android- I never backed that up- I have only used cell phones for emergency only for the last 15 yrs. Dislike that OS immensely!

            Thnx for your time!

Upon opening itunes again, it restored the backup folder that was deleted to direct backup straight to external ssd….and when I ran manual backup it backed up to pc so the direct to ssd external trick didn’t hold. I should have known as the way to do that was from an article in 2018. Worth a shot and didnt hurt anything.

              itunes

Doesnt that look like two iphones attached? Huh!

When click on “color”icon, backup screens appear

When Click on Black icon, kicked out and the missing driver window appears along with eject iphone button(does not appear to be directions to do that) but there it is. I also have external SSD connected fwiw. So I’m back to looking for a driver ituneslikes. (device mgr tells me I have the most suitable drivers already, itunes tells me I dont.)

And I still dont know why I can only create ONE backup file on the PC. Is this a feature?

I had less trouble android. and no backups!

iTunes is available for Windows and macOS through Mojave.

macOS Catalina and later uses the Finder (plug in iPhone and look for it in Finder) to accomplish the same tasks.

Other than the Bluetooth vulnerability Nathan was talking about recently, iOS 13.5 seems to be working great for the iPad and iPhone. Read where Apple will no doubt be rolling out a fix for the Bluetooth issue in the not so distant future. Just have it set to Off when the device is out and about.

I noticed the battery isn’t draining as quickly as it was with the last two iPadOS updates. iPhone battery usage has been holding together well also, which hasn’t been a problem in the past for my iPhone 8 Plus. As time goes on there might be a change of tune, but so far I’m happy with the new update.
