I am a volunteer tech support in a senior community. I make visits to my clients. Last week my client asked for help with an Intel NUC that was suddenly doing random restarts (or returns to log in screen) during activity, that is, while she was reading email or working on documents. The setting for screen lock was 3 hours of no activity (not 20 sec!).

I am always suspicious that a Win update has done something weird like this, and indeed I found that it had updated from Win-10 to Win-11 24H2 without warning on 2/7, with a further security update on 2/17.

I searched for people complaining about this issue and found some from last year, but nothing recent. Seems there are 2 choices: roll back to Win-10 (there is a time limit on that I believe?) or wait for the next monthly update and hope it gets fixed.

    I appreciate your advice.

    thanks

    Hilary

It’s too late to roll back.  You had 10 days on 2/7.  Is there anything in the event log?

I would look for a bios update from Intel to see if it helps.

Sometimes an answer is hiding in plain sight.  To eliminate this consider checking the startup tab in task manager and see what is starting on boot that is unnecessary and disable it.

Also, a peek with Sysinternal’s Process explorer and Autoruns might reveal something.

OP is not the only person who was involuntarily updated to Win11 24H2

wonder if the OP tried to use GRC’s InControl app to prevent the involuntary upgrade to 24H2

It sounds like a display driver issue or a background app crashing.

I would check the manufacturer’s support site for BIOS and Video driver updates and install any.  Then if the system is still unstable, uncheck all unnecessary apps from the startup tab and restart to see if it is stable.  It’s a process of elimination, and we are tempted to change things all at once, but if you want to know what is disfunctional or in need of an update, try these one at a time.
