Using an HP iPAQ hx2190 as a data-collection device for a survey instrument. I can save the files onto the main memory and use the WinCE 5.0 File Explorer to copy them onto the SD card. All that appears to work properly. If I insert the SD card onto the SD card reader on my my desktop PC, then the files are invisible. Other files on the SD card (placed their by non-WinCE software) are visible to the card reader, and I can also see those files using the WinCE File Explorer when the SD card is in the iPAQ.

If I install ActiveSync onto the desktop computer, then I can see the files, but I want to avoid using ActiveSync (if possible) when I start using the survey instrument in the field in conjunction with a notebook computer. Just one more application that I would prefer not to load onto the notebook system…

It’s as if the iPAQ writes its files into an partition that is invisible to my SD card reader. Is there any way that I can copy the files onto the SD card in the iPAQ and have them visible to my SD card reader?

Further investigation showed that files written to the CF card instead of the SD card *are* visible to my card reader. That gives me a path to move files without requiring ActivSync.
