With Firefox 4 very close to launch and Google Chrome in a perpetual update cycle, lots of new browser goodies are on the horizon — and surprisingly, IE 9 contains a few of these morsels.[/size]

I use both IE 9 RC and Chrome 10 beta (latest release). I have to say I do not see much difference in speed but if anything IE 9RC is faster. I love IE 9 RC. Just as no one would be able to force me to change from Win 7 back to XP, I’m beginning to feel the same about IE 9 RC. I gave up on FF quite some time ago and good riddance.

I especially like the ability to put the tabs on their own row and like the tabs under the address bar rather than over the address bar like Chrome.

Only real thing that needs immediate improvement, before RTM, is memory use. If you keep a browser window for some time, refreshing in between, and keep opening and closing tabs, memory usage tens to grow a bit (at least on the x64 version, haven’t used the x86 version enough to experience the same).

I have been using IE9 for the last week and find it very good (and noticeably faster than IE8). The problem at the moment, is that I downloaded and have been using the 64 bit version of IE9 and it cannot be configured as the default browser. Neither could IE8 64 bit. The other problem with both is that there is no Flash player for either 64 bit version. So, I am stuck with IE8 32 bit as my default browser and IE9 64 bit for experimentation. Fortunately both use the same configuration data including cookies, Favourites, etc.

I dumped FireFox some time ago because I could never get it to display properly and constantly on a large (24″) high resolution monitor. It is OK if one sits up close to the monitor but it is nearly impossible to have a browser window where ‘everything’ is expanded to about 150% and have that magnification applied to everything in the browser window AND still allow selection of Text Size easily.

IE9 is an improvement; however, one quirk is driving me nuts. Must be an easy fix that I’m overlooking, but need help. My OS is Windows 7 pro, 64 bit but I’m using IE9 32 bit. Often when I click on secondary links I usually get a blank nonfunctional window. Example: In Woody’s “Internet Explorer 9 — finally a competitor” article where he states: “The full text of this column is posted at WindowsSecrets.com/2011/02/17/06 (paid content, opens in a new window/tab),” clicking on this link takes me to a blank window (new tab). However, I can copy the shortcut, paste it into a new window and it opens. This does not happen in FireFox–the link takes me directly to the full text article. Is this a typical problem with IE9, or is it a fault/bad setting in my system? Thanks.

Works just fine here. Links open appropriately. In fact an original problem whereby the link opened both a new window and the original window to the new page has been fixed. I would think this is a fault with your system. i know of no setting that would cause this.
