I have set up a network of 3 computers running Win 98. I need to set them up so that profiles other than admin have very restricted if any access to internet. I would rather not remove it, but I guess that has to be a last option. Have tried just about everything. Even played with Poledit, but that doesn’t do it. Thought I had it made when I found a prog called K9 parental control, but it isn’t for Win 98. Any suggestions out there? I am at my wits end.

While I don’t have much experience with limiting children from the internet, I did do a search for “restrict or limit internet on Win 98”. Here is a page of interesting applications that looked appealing to me. Here is another interesting link that may provide ideas for you. Good luck with your monitoring job!

How ‘restricted’ are we talking here?

I would go for completely disabling it for all but admin profile.

I don’t know if this will work for you, but may be worth a try:

          Tools > Interent Options > Content > Enable…
Click on Approved Sites, enter “www.*” in the ‘Allow this site’ entry field and select Never
It will then ask for a password – don’t forget it!

A quick test showed that attempts to access the internet were stopped with a request for the password. I’m not sure if different profiles will meet with different responses, and you may have to play around with different masks to achieve what you want.

Following on from Leif’s solution, you could then install something like X-Teq’s X-Setup to hide certain or all tabs from the Internet Options dialog.
