• Internet Disconnects Randomly

My Internet gets disconnected at random. I can be using the PC or not. The good news is, a Reboot “resets” the connection. I have high speed cable DSL.

I’ve used the Network problem wizard (or whatever it’s called) and that didn’t help.

I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 about 3 weeks back, and this problem started right away.

(It is deeply dissatisfying that the Notification area cannot tell me graphically whether I’m connected or not–or am I not reading it right? The old icon would show the little yellow triangle and exclamation mark, or the two computers would not have animated arrows between them (or something). With this, sometimes I have to check a few different browser windows to be sure the connection is truly out.)

It is not wireless. It is high speed cable. The landlord (another floor) has a router and there are two PCs on the network. I can see the name of his PC and he can see mine. There is nothing shared and I have no jurisdiction over the router or connections (only the back of my PC).

My problems should have absolutely nothing to do with the connection, since nothing about the physical network changed recently, except my own PC after a Windows 7 Install. Connection can be lost at various times of day. Lately I’ve been online for long stretches with no cutouts, but when I come home from work, it has cut out. So, given time, my connection to the internet will and does cut out.

This may or may not help, but it’s worth a try.
Open Device manager, expand the Network Adapters secion, right click on the adapter, select Properties, click the Power Management tab, and ensure that “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is NOT checked.

You are SO RIGHT ON THIS ONE. I tried this and it also cured my seize up problem that started with Win 7 64 bit with 8 G memory.

Could be power interruptions at the Router and Modem point.

Are you saying that there is a cable running from the other floor to your floor and is connected to your machine?

If NOT, how do you connect to the router?

I would turn on the firewall and turn off all sharing. You do not want others peering at your machine.

    • #1204595

      DaveA-Yes I said I have a high speed cable internet. ]

Trust me on the one thing I know for certain. This is directly related to my Windows 7 install. Everything else is stable and did NOT change. The problems began the very same evening as my upgrade. I appreciate any help, but please assume that the externals have not changed.

Rebel-that box was checked, but now it’s not. I will see if it makes a difference–thanks, this is the kind of obscure setting that I suspect is at work.

Paul-as I state above, there is *no* sharing on this network.

Then I would check to see if the OEM has a Windows 7 driver for the NIC card?
You are using a Generic driver unless the OEM provided a driver to Microsoft.

My Network Adapter’s driver was (and is) up to date with manufacturer software.

I noticed a few nights ago, no web pages could connect/update, so in effect I was not accessing the Internet. But I was able to initiate a chat conversation in Yahoo’s chat-from-within-mail feature. But nothing else worked.

Also, after doing the following last night, my ‘Net crashed during the night (when not in use). BTW to reiterate, my computer power does NOT go off or sleep, which is intentional.

Do you have control of the Router and modem, or does your landlord upstairs have the control?

    • #1204790

Thank you to anyone helping with this.

The landlord has control, and I say again, this has nothing to do with his end, or physical setup. This is all about Windows 7, settings, and the clean install. There were no changes on his end, my side is the one with all the variables. These problems started immediately after the Win 7 upgrade and were nonexistent before.

Try this – using Device Manager check the network adapter properties and disable IPv6.

JoeP, I changed this and will see how it does.

Can anyone explain why–and it just happened again–no Internet connectivity from within Flock, Firefox, Safari, or MSIE, but inside Chrome, where I have a Yahoo account with e-mail chat, I could chat for as long as I wanted. The smileys came up as tiny Broken Link symbols, but that was the only limitation. I could see who was online and choose to chat with them. But no DrudgeReport, no Accuweather, no Yahoo chat in Firefox, no Facebook…

One possible explanation is if your PC is talking to a DNS server that is not working – quite probably a DNS server in your router, but this depends on your setup.

When DNS is not working you can continue to access some things, because you have a locally cached record of the name to address translation, but you cannot access other things because you have no way to convert the hostname to an IP address.

If this is your problem then reconfiguring your PC to use OpenDNS might help.

    • #1204945

I may need to try the OpenDNS, but I’ve had problems with it in the past.

I found that I was set up as part of a homegroup, although I share no files or devices. I left that homegroup.

Could it be that the router (not under my control) needs to do some sort of “handshake” (like faxes) with my new sytem? I have never used a router personally so it’s about as relevant to me as sewer pipes. They are important but I don’t give them much thought and certainly don’t get my hands dirty with them. But it sucks if they don’t work right!!

My connection was lost again, under the disabled IPv6 setting. Yahoo chat continued to operate under Chrome.

I took down the error messages from each website, and details of a mini “crash” within Yahoo. I’ll attach them.

Next time this happens I will go into my Firewall for activity leading up to the disconnect. (I never had a breach under XP or Vista).

    • #1205374

      Firewall Log!

Does this firewall log which includes an Internet virtual disconnect, reveal anything about my disconnects? Again this time, Yahoo Messenger (mail version) maintained chat capability.

I have highlighted the time frame of the shut down. Although I was not at home, I narrowed the outage by looking at e-mails. If this happens again, now I have an Internet clock “ticking” in a browser tab, that hopefully will stop at the exact time of the problem.

    • #1205661

Have a look at this kb article and see if that helps

      • #1208238

        John,

I’m not sure how this is relevant. Is this something you drew from looking at my Firewall log?

Have a look at this kb article and see if that helps

The problem has gone away. The last thing I consciously did to try to alleviate my Internet connection being lost at random times is based on the one thing that was still connected–Yahoo Messenger (mail version). I set something up to constantly be communicating: An Internet clock. (http://www.clocklink.com/world_clock.php). I saw it as an anchor for my Internet connection. It is low tech and theoretical. Some day I’ll close the tab in Firefox and see if my connection issues return.

I’m glad you’ve solved the problem (for now). My comment was based on the line

          Code:
In Chrome, which had been open: Safari can't open the page "http://www.facebook.com/{friend name}.  The error is:  "unknown error" (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10055)

Is the firewall stopping outgoing connections? You only need to stop inbound to protect from direct attack. Outbound firewall should limit malware going out, but isn’t essential.

      cheers, Paul
