    Hi,
In the process of trying to create a combined index for 60+ documents, I have found that some documents have strange formatting in the index page number.
I have previously (for many years) applied font formatting to my XE fields without problems. I like to make the index entries inconspicuous.
I have found Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 204433 which addresses the bad formatting.
This article tells me that this is a known problem. That’s useful. clapping
The suggested workarounds are unacceptable. (I’m trying to make the index entries inconspicuous.) frown
The article also does not explain why the problem is intermittent.
I have two apparently identical situations and one exhibits the problem and the other doesn’t. confused3
I have attached to cut-down documents
If anyone can find the critical difference, I’d be very grateful. please

    Thanks,
    Judith Australia

I guess that if Microsoft knew a decent explanation and/or workaround, they’d have published it.

I have no idea why the two documents behave differently. Saving as .RTF and then as .DOC again doesn’t help.

Another workaround that is probably also unacceptable to you is to add a * CharFormat switch in the INDEX field, so that it looks like

      { INDEX e ” ” h “A” c “2” z “3081” * CharFormat }

when field codes are displayed. This will remove the formatting picked up from the index entry fields, but unfortunately all other formatting too – it will be overriden by the formatting of the first character in the field code when the field is updated.

        Thanks Hans.
That seems to do the trick and appears to have no negatives because I never apply direct formatting to anything.

Thanks for the quick reply. clapping
        Regards,
        Judith
