For Q3, the loss was $16.6 billion. For Q4, the loss is $0.1 billion. That is obviously a dramatic improvement

This is a misleading comparison; Q3’s loss included $13.5 billion of tax provision and restructuring charges. A more valid comparison would be Operating income excluding restructuring charges. Q3 is then a loss of $3.4 billion and Q4 a gain of
$0.5 billion. Q3 also has cost of sales of 85% of revenue whereas Q4’s is 61% which looks odd to me without more detail. Other costs to do with the restructure in Q3’s COS?

Bottom line: I don’t think comparing Q3 with Q4 is telling us very much at all and certainly doesn’t constitute a “dramatic” improvement. Possibly some improvement.

      Just one more thing:
Q4’s cost of sales of 61% of revenue is in line with the 2023 full year, so if we assume that Q3’s 85% is to do with one-off restructuring charges then we can adjust the comparison further to get what I think is apples-to-apples:
      Q3 is a loss of $0.2 billion and Q4 a gain of $0.5 billion.

      1. For Q3, the loss was $16.6 billion.
      2. For Q4, the loss is $0.1 billion.
      3. Free coffee was restored in November.

Seems obvious to me that it was caffeine that improved productivity and profits. 😉

In all seriousness, this was typed on the second of two AMD-based workstations I’ve had in 4 years.

TSMC Considers Running Intel’s US Factories After Trump Team Request

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is considering taking a controlling stake in Intel Corp.’s factories at the request of Trump administration officials, a person familiar with the matter said, as the president looks to boost American manufacturing and maintain US leadership in critical technologies.

Trump officials raised the idea of a deal between the two companies in recent meetings with the Taiwanese chipmaker, the person said, and TSMC was receptive. It’s unclear whether Intel is open to a transaction…
