    Hello Loungers,
I have an older Dell PE 830 Win 2003 R2 server. Lately it’s been disconnecting the Network connection with the following soft error: Event ID 27, source: e1express – Intel Pro/1000 PT Server Adapter Link has been disconnected. I might add to this that we got new card from Dell that’s Pci-e to replace the Broadcom on-board adapter which gave us the same error. Some more information that might help I changed the Ethernet cord, replace Megabit switch twice Dlink DGS-108G without any luck. Last thing I did I tried Cisco switch just to eliminate the Dlink factor, and instead of disconnecting every 4-hour or so it’s now every 12 – 16 hours intervals. I’m at lost, any ideas loungers?

    Regards,

Not an easy one, since you have swapped out most of the other hardware.

I wonder about the s1express message though: could this be a message that the PCIe bus no longer sees the card, or a message from the card that the media state is disconnected? Perhaps running an ipconfig /all command and a verification of device manager when the error occurs might illuminate which one. The reason being that the source of the issue is rather different if the bus is loosing the card compared to a card media state message.

I do recall see something like this a couple of years ago. Sorry, but I can’t recall the exact details now, and I think it was a PCI rather than express, but moving the card to a different slot stopped the problem.

After a long search for a solution I decided to replace the card that I got from Dell the Pci-e Intel Pro/1000 PT Server Adapter with a good old 3Com 3C905CX-TX 10/100 fast Ethernet PCI adapter. It’s been working without losing connection for the last 12-hour. I planing on changing to Intel PCI Gigabit adapter as soon as possible. My suspicion’s that the bus may be causing this error, but I can’t confirm it. All I know is that the Broadcom on board and the Intel pci-e cards where giving similar errors.

I would appreciate any thought on the subject

        Cheers,

          Glad it’s working for now.

Yes, my suspicions fall on the bus communications to the card too, after all it was an e1express error message that was being logged rather than an ethernet media state message.

Maybe the driver or card firmware are not fully compatible with the PCIe bus?

I’m about to make myself look silly by predicting the future now, but if you swapped to a Gigabit PCI card I would expect it to be OK too.

            Hello Loungers,

After swapping the PCI-e NIC on the Dell PE 830 the error disappear, but it’s still giving me troubles. After
12 – 16 hours the connection dropped and there’s no errors on the eventviewer and it just goes offline.
I ordered a PCI NIC from Dell it should be here on Friday. This card it’s not Intel according to Dell they no longer available, so they are shipping this one Dell/Intel Pro 100S 10/100 PCI NIC (8G779) which suppose to replace the original Intel card. Sound strange to me but, that what Dell saying. Stay tuned I will post the the outcome of the new NIC what’s arrived.

            Cheers,
