• intel dch gfx drivers vs Msoft’s misunderstandings

Intel has announced they will allow their latest DCH drivers to override mfr’s lagging video drivers. However, they don’t allow overriding Msoft’s default. I have an Intel Iris Plus 655 gfx, which has an intel gfx 26.20.100.8141 driver release. Msoft thinks the latest driver for this gfx chip is the 26.20.100.7529 and keeps trying unsuccessfully to roll back the 8141 release to the 7529 release. In windows update, I continually get a “non-error” A current driver on your PC may be better than the driver we’re trying to install. We’ll keep trying to install.” And while it does no other updates drivers or otherwise will update either.

Intel points at Msoft, Msoft points at Intel, meanwhile, nothing gets fixed.

    steps taken

    1. a.uninstall all drivers with networking off in safe mode back to the Msoft generic driver. reboot. verify Msoft only driver. b. install Intel 8141 driver, reboot. Verify Intel driver in Device Manager. c. restart networking and attempt to have Windows update retrieve security and flash updates –fails as the driver update attempts to roll back to 7529 again and blocks other updates.

    2. attempt above again but at step b, restore network and allow security and flash updates to install. they do but once again intel 7529 driver does also and locks up future updates.

    3. try to manually delete all intel DCH drivers of any release # from the windows component store. Blocked by windows on the 7529 rivers saying they are in use, even when Device manager shows 8141 release is confirmed installed.

    4. go into group policy and disallow driver updates entirely — works but an ineffective long term solution.

    5. completely reset windows, doing a clean install to hopefully de-gunk any reg entries and component store issues. works until a reboot and windows update once again tries to rollback to 7529 drivers and throws the “non-error” again.

Help! I’m out of decent options.

Option 4 is your only man really. I decided a long time ago that I don’t want Windows Update managing my drivers.

What’s probably happening here is that the Intel driver (being a generic one) has a short device ID in the INF (e.g. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1916) rather than a long one with a subsystem ID (e.g. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1916&SUBSYS_8100103C). Windows will always prioritise a driver with a long ID match over one with a short match, even if the latter is newer.

Block Microsoft’s driver updates. Problem solved. This won’t block Windows from installing drivers for new hardware.

I always manually install Intel and Nvidia DCH drivers. Microsoft never overwritten them.

        Thank you for your thoughts

was my option 4 (attached below) of disallowing, adequate or too heavy-handed?

That doesn’t show disallowed. That policy has to be Enabled if you don’t want drivers via Windows Update (as explained in the Help field towards bottom right).

Same thing happendes to me, but at some point, Windows Update successfully installed the old driver (over the newer 100.8141 one). Then I went to Device Manager, the reverted to the “last” controller and it asked why, I selected “better performance”, and now I have the newer driver installed and Windows Update is not trying to install the old one anymore, so no errors.

you were lucky it seems. I am sticking with blocking Windoze driver updates for the time being, however. thanks

Intel issued a new 27.20.100.8187 DCH Driver with new audio drivers:
