Hi,
Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I don’t know where else to try.

Dell laptop running Vista, I believe SP2, but Vista does not seem to offer any info on one’s system.

For some time Windows update has been offering the following:
Intel-Storage-Intel(R) ICH9M – E/M Sata AHCI Controller

I have not installed it, having read many times that it is advisable to get drivers from the manufacturer rather that MS, but I am unable to find it on the Dell site.

Should I accept the Windows download, or give it a miss?

Any advice much appreciated.

I don’t have Windows Vista but for basic system information try Start | Control Panel | System which is where it is in Windows 7. Also from the Start menu try opening Accessories | System Tools | System Information.

As the driver is an Intel update have you looked on the Intel Websitefor a manufacturer’s version? At least the driver from Windows Update must be MS certified. And if you were to install the offered driver and it resulted in a problem you could use System Restore to roll-back to the pre-install state.

Thanks for that. I hadn’t thought of trying control panel, as with XP it’s under Start/Accessories/ System Tools as you mention, but I’ve never managed to find Accessories on the wife’s Vista PC or the laptop, both of which I have to maintain. I’ll give it a try when she has her PC switched on.

As for the driver issue, that was just muddled thinking on my part – of course it was the Intel site I tried, especially have had previous problems with drivers from Dell. Good point about System Restore if it goes wrong.

It’s part of the drivers associated with your motherboard. It should be safe to download and install it seeing that you can’t find it on Dell’s website.
Normally I would avoiding getting such a high profile driver anywhere else but the manufacturer. You might actually gain from this one.

Sounds as though I should get it. See above reply re Dell/Intel web site.

It should also be noted that there would be zero need for WU to provide a driver your computer’s manufacture should have provided.
[If your being provided an option by WU for a chipset driver then there is something definitely amiss ].
