Against the odds, Intel is gaining ground with its ARC graphics chips. Its new “Battlemage” chips are selling out. Intel’s A-series chips, codenamed “

To me, this is huge.
I have a 3060 Ti. For an Nvidia upgrade I would have to go to a 4070.
Now I could get a A750 for < 180. Much faster!
How are drivers?
Huge thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With the B-series chips, performance has skyrocketed, so much so that Battlemage-based graphics cards are perpetually out of stock. The struggle with games is over; Intel has left its own Alchemist line in the dust.
I added the bolding above.
@krism , why not go with the B series for an even bigger performance boost, from the sounds of it anyway?
Here’s the link to Intel’s specs page for the B580 chip:

And here’s the page for the driver, just released a couple of days ago:

Both links open in separate tabs.

Yes, I think knee jerking on this would be wrong and I need to explore specs and availability.
Microcenter supposedly sometimes offers trade-ins so I would need to find out if. They would have a 770. A 770 would be sooooo much faster than the 3060. 4070’s are way too expensive, I wouldn’t consider them. Of course, since I’m not a gamer, I don’t “need” one so could wait a month or so and see what happens w price and availability. Nothing will happen for a week anyway so I will just watch! Exciting!!!
Here’s the card’s page on Newegg. Card’s currently out of stock, but expected to be replenished within the next week: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16814883006
Price is currently at or below current prices for some 4060 cards, and way cheaper than 4070 cards from MSI currently on Newegg.
Some workstation benchmarking comparisons pitting the Battlemage B580 against some competitors at Igor’s Lab.
Sydney Butler’s 26-Dec-2024 You Should Probably Wait Before Buying an Intel B580 on How-To Geek includes some interesting comments about Intel GPUs and Resizable BAR (a.k.a. Smart Access Memory). Overall, though, a very favourable review.

Zero problem with photo and video editing, and with Windows components that use graphics.
I’m not the right guy to ask about gaming, which is where all the complaints were. To its credit, Intel has been working diligently and very publicly to address those issues.

I agree. But now is probably not the right time to buy. Intel is having trouble meeting demand, so the prices have been arbitrarily inflated. That is definitely not what Intel wants because its success will be based upon being very strong competitively. It can only control the higher asking prices by delivering volume.
Might take a few months.
But in @krism’s case, he’ll get a boost from the 3070 to an A-series board, and now is definitely the time to buy those before they are completely supplanted by Bs. But as he notes, research will be needed to make sure about compatibility. It appears that the B-series has fewer issues, although Intel continues to push driver updates to me.
Overall, though, a very favourable review.
Even the bad reviews are good.
One thing to look out for on YouTube is clickbait. If the title of every video is “This is great!”, people will stop watching. So there’s always somebody who finds a little nit that can be used as clickbait.

I fixed it. Someday, we’ll have our crack copy wizard, Roberta Scholz, cast her discerning eye over more than just the newsletter. Not yet, though. So thanks for the ad hoc copy edit.
Susan here: Moderator edit and note to Alex. This isn’t really relevant to the original topic so I don’t know how this fits?

The Wall street journal had a recent article about Intel.
You may think you know how much Intel is struggling, but the reality is worse.
The once-mighty American innovation powerhouse is losing market share in multiple areas that are critical to its profitability. Its many competitors include not just the AI juggernaut Nvidia but smaller rivals and even previously stalwart allies like Microsoft.
One flashing warning sign: In the latest quarter reported by both companies, Intel’s perennial also-ran, AMD, actually eclipsed Intel’s revenue for chips that go into data centers. This is a stunning reversal: In 2022, Intel’s data-center revenue was three times that of AMD…
