I’m currently using Intego VirusBarrier as the virus scanner on my Macs. It’s running exceptionally well. I’m not having any performance issues with it, and everything “just works”.

However, one magazine I’ve contributed to in the past (mostly before contributing to AskWoody) is running ads on Thirtyseven4, and their CEO is also a regular contributor to the magazine. Thirtyseven4 seems to be based on QuickHeal. It also mentions support for Big Sur.

Is there any reason for me to take a trial into Thirtyseven4 or look further into possibly using it, or should I stick with Intego VirusBarrier since it works and I’m having zero issues with it?

    Thanks!

Now I remember the name. Thanks for reminding me. Looks like I’m best to stick with Intego. In spoke with someone whose used Intego for twenty years without issues, so seems I should stay put!

      Nathan,

If I wanted to try out Intego, I suppose first would have to turn off Webroot SecureAnywhere, my present AV. Anything else I would have to do in preparation for the test?

      Is there a free-trial period?

Is there a practical way to test the effectiveness of Intego and compare it to that of Webroot?

You would simply uninstall Webroot (drag it to the trash, and it “should” run the uninstaller).

There is a free 30 day trial of Intego. You probably just need “Internet Security Barrier X9” (the cheapest version). The “Premium Bundle” probably has stuff you won’t use.

You can download some malware samples from Objective See to run some tests, but not sure if you want to actually do that to your machine. Intego’s been in business for years and protecting Macs for years, so you’d be set with them for sure.

Nathan, I would like to keep Webroot for the time being, rather than to trash it right away, until I feel confident using something else, such as Intego. So I would need to stop Webroot from running, while keeping it installed in the Mac. Also I suppose that, before trashing Webroot, I probably should get first in touch with the Webroot people and tell them I want to stop paying for it. Anything else?

You can quit Webroot from the Menu Bar (click the green W icon and click on “Shut Down”). That’s what I’d recommend while you test Intego.

My recommendation is to remove Webroot, then throw the cancellation switch. It’s possible you “may” need support to assist with removing Webroot (Webroot didn’t fully remove off of one of my Macs, and I needed support’s assistance to get ti fully removed). Once it’s removed, then throw the cancellation switch on it, and signup for a paid Intego plan.

I’m currently using Intego VirusBarrier as the virus scanner on my Macs

Is it wise today to choose MacOS A/V that isn’t universal/M1 ?

Intego is Universal. I have also heard that TS4 is having major issues on Big Sur and Apple Silicon Macs, so I’m sticking with Intego for sure. It’s the only AV app I know that’s guaranteed to work with future Macs and macOS releases.

Nathan: “It’s the only AV app I know that’s guaranteed to work with future Macs and macOS releases.

That’s good to know, though I wonder if Intego, the “only … guaranteed” might not be joined by others like it in the not too distant future, as it seems the most reasonable way to go for those developing AVs that would like to see theirs being run by paying Mac users.

This is going to be definitely something I’ll need to keep abreast of before I take the big jump over Catalina from Mojave to BigSur by August or early September (and still riding an Intel Mac), hoping that BigSur has become ripe enough by then (to me it’s looking a bit on the green side, right now.)

Intego started off as Mac only and only recently added a Windows version to their lineup. They’ve built Mac versions exclusively since 1997. Their primary audience/target is Mac users, and the Windows version is more of a way for them to bulk up their Windows AV scanning engine for Mac users so they’re not spreading Windows viruses around (and having their own Windows version allows them to do this plus make extra money doing it).

They’re going to ensure they remain fully Mac compatible for the future, as their entire business model and market depends on it.

I am presently using the paid version of Malwarebytes on my IMac.  Do you feel that Intego is better?  Can they both be used together?  I have been reading comparisons of AV’s but it seems like a minefield to the uninitiated like me.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

This might be relevant to your question:

I am using a different anti virus/anti malware software in my MacBook Pro laptop, not Intego, and I’m also using the Malwarebytes free version. I run the AV first, then Malwarebytes once a day, with no problems I have noticed. I am doing this because PKCano once wrote, months ago, this is how she does it. She runs Malwarebytes after the AV, just in case, and so do I ever since.

Thanks OscarCP.  My Malwarebytes is set to do multiple scans per day.  I guess I could turn that off and run a scan when I wish?

I use Intego as my primary AV. I run the free version of Malwarebytes about once a week just to see if it catches anything Intego doesn’t.

Intego protects you from spreading Windows viruses onto Windows users. Malwarebytes for Mac doesn’t.

I recommend Intego for your primary, then run the free Malwarebytes on the side.

Please help:  I tried to download the Intego Premium Bundle X9.  I must have checked something wrong because I was then prevented from accessing my gmail accounts.  I uninstalled the free trial and will await advice on the steps to take or not take when installing.

Thanks Nathan.  Here’s what I did.  I changed Malwarebytes to the free version so that I can control when to run Malwarebytes.  I downloaded the free version of Intego Internet Security x9 Bundle and am doing a full scan at the moment.

Please let me know what preferences you have made, for example do you use Standard Protection, do you use Schedulled Scans and if so what schedule, Real time scanning, etc.  Thanks – I never knew about Intego and am very pleased that you are educating me.
