Installing an old printer on a Win 10 laptop

Hello! I wasn’t sure where to put this question – but here goes. I have a pretty old HP Deskjet D1455 printer that still works. It is a wired printer – no wireless connection – that I want to use occasionally with my HP Envy Win 10 laptop.

I tried just plugging the printer into the laptop via USB hoping it might be recognized, but it wasn’t.

So – how would I go about installing that printer so I can occasionally plug it into the laptop and use it. I don’t have an installation disk that I can locate, and I am not sure if I can download drivers that might do the trick.

I hate to give up on it since it is a good backup – just doesn’t work with the laptops I use now – only with my old HP and Thinkpad – both running Win 7 and neither are connected to the internet anymore.

Personal opinion:

I have an older OfficeJet Pro 8720. I do not use any MS app to run it. AT ALL. For Win10, I use the Win7 or Win8.1 Full Feature Driver downloaded from HP. I do not use the “Smart” app and I do not let MS control the printer in the Settings App.

I have excellent control of printing and scanning, and the ability to save scans as pics or PDF.

So, are you saying that using a method such as described here: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/ish_2224996-1993298-16 is not a good idea – if it even worked?

Of course, if no driver is available, that method above probably won’t work??

Hi lhiggins:

I don’t think driver downloads for the Deskjet D1455 are still available the official HP (US-English) site. I drilled down to the D1400 series of printers at https://support.hp.com/us-en/retired-products and it says “The following products have been retired and are no longer supported by HP. All official HP support content for these products has been removed from this web site” (see attached image that includes the Deskjet 1455).

I live in Canada and checked the Software and Driver page for the Deskjet D1455 at https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/hp-deskjet-d1400-printer-series/model/3311788 and there are a few utilities like the HP Print and Scan Doctor posted there, but I couldn’t find a driver package, even if I chose an older OS like Win 7 on that download page.

That worked!!! Thanks! The printer driver installed and now I just need to get some new ink to be able to use it when I need a backup printer.

I’m guessing your printer is not old enough to have come with a CD that provided the driver, etc.

Even astrophysicist Carl Sagan when speaking astronomically used Billions, not Trillions.

Hi Charlie,

Actually, it is pretty old, and I think there was a CD at one point – but I just can’t find it – LOL! The link madhatter provided worked find and I got that old printer to work with both of my laptops, so all’s good.
