• Installing additional apps (Office 2000)

I am running Win98SE on a 1Ghz Dell Dimension. I am using an OEM (Dell) SR-1 version of Office 2000 SBE (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher). I am in the process of obtaining a full retail version (unused) of Office 2000 Premium from which I wish to install Access, Powerpoint and FrontPage. I also wish to to apply any recommended patches as appropriate.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether I will have any problems just installing the additional apps from Premium or whether I would need to uninstall the SBE apps first and then install the whole of the Premium package?

Any advice from you gurus will be much appreciated and may save me a lot of grief. Thanks.

I have no personal experience with this.

You could try installing over first and see what happens. I suspect that because the old product key was for Small Business, the Office installer could get very confused or generate errors when you try to run applications first installed with the old key. Hopefully my fears are ungrounded. smile

If you do decide to completely wipe out the SBE, there are number of threads on this board on (1) how to migrate all your files and settings, and (2) how do clear it out completely from your registry.

Thanks for your helpful reply – your point about the product key is a good one. I think I will plan to uninstall SBE and follow it with a full install of Premium. I have done some more trolling and found references to a couple of MS utilities on clearing out the registry (your point 2) and I will look for references to migrating files and settings. If you have any other suggestions or possible pitfalls you know of…

        Thanks again.

Please see my earlier post, number 169164, on migration tools.

I’m still hoping to hear feedback on Personality Tranxport Pro.

Thanks again. I looked at that and I have checked out the PT Pro site and sent off a couple of questions. I will let you know how I get on if I do anything on this front.

              A follow up FYI:

I sent the following to the PT Pro support address:

“My requirement is about as basic as it gets. I have a stand-alone PC (1GHz
Dell) running Win98SE and IE6. I simply wish to uninstall MS Office 2000 SBE
(Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook) and install MS Office 2000 Premium Edition
(same + Access, FrontPage, PowerPoint). How can your product help me and how
              would the process work?”

              They promptly replied as follows:

“You can use PT Pro to capture the persistent settings of MS Office 2000.
Simply install and run PT Pro. Select the applications associated with MS
Office that you want the settings and files to be “extracted”. After making
your selection, perform an extraction of the “personality”. You can then
uninstall MS Office 2000 SBE and install MS Office 2000 Premium Edition.
Following the installation of Office, run PT Pro again and inject the
              personality.

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us.”

Sounds encouraging, for $39.95 it might be worth a try. Thanks again for the pointer.

It’s a bit creepy talking about personality injections, but the computer feels no pain. smile

Hmmm, my computer does have feelings.
It throws a tantrum if I don’t treat it nicely.

I went thru this woth Office 97, not sure whether Office 2000 would be the same. Here’s what I did:

      1. I uninstalled all Office SBE components other than Publisher.
      2. THen I installed Office Pro.

This gives you a single integrated Office environment, with Publisher on its own.
As I recall, this was also the recommended way to do things, but I do not recall where that is stated.

You then just copy th templates, etc. to the appropriate Office 2000 directories.

Thanks, Howard, that seems the safest way to go. I am curious about you singling out Publisher – on my system it is not listed as a separate Remove Program option so I presume it will go away when I uninstall SBE. I will read the installation instructions for Premium when I have it and see if it says anything about separating Publisher in any way.

        Thanks again.

I just rebooted as Win 98.

Add/Remove programs has separate entries for Office 97 Pro and Publisher 98.
It could be that when you start to ininstall SBE, you will be offerred an option to remove/add particular componenys.
Of course, SBE 2000 may work differently than SBE 97.

Note that the PID for Publisher 98 is OEM.
The PID of Office 97 is retail.
