A friend was given a copy of Office XP and told to install EXCEL so she could help out another person on a project. She has run into the ACTIVATION WIZARD which is saying that this copy is already installed on another system. The original purchaser of Office XP is claiming that she has installed it on several computers. I guess my question – is there any special process to uninstalling this from my friend’s computer?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 26, 2002 at 10:19 pm #572879No, this person needs to go and BUY her own copy. Office XP can be installed on two (2) machines, one desktop and one laptop. This copy has been installed many times, that is why MS statred using the activation process.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 27, 2002 at 12:31 am #572897If possible, uninstalling should always be initiated through the Add/Remove Programs “control panel.” If that doesn’t work (it tries to continue the install instead) you might have to resort to other measures. I vaguely think there was a program called Eraser available at Microsoft to scrub certain software off a computer. You might search here in the Lounge for Eraser.

I’m sure that’s true, but I don’t think that was the question posed (to uninstall the original installation). On the other hand, perhaps the “already installed” error was due to the new Product ID “self-announcement” feature? In that case, a valid second installation might be okay after the removal of the first installation. I would say it makes sense to experiment, but then you might end up with completely useless software…
