How does one install Notepad in WIN XP? In WIN 98, one went to the ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS and found it under accessories. I was not able to find it listed anywhere??

A friend claimed he did not have it installed – but now he says – oops – it is. Thanks anyhoo.

not only is it installed by default, it’s hard to lose, since it’s a protected file and you need to delete 3 copies of it, in a specific order, to remove it from your drive.

What’s the order, and does it apply to XP Pro?

yes, it applies to all versions of windows that use system file checker or protected system files

1) Search for all versions of the file you want to delete or replace (i replace notepad with a different text editor). Be sure to use the option to search for all hidden files.

2) You should find 2 or 3, depending on the os and the file. Notepad is in windowssystem32dllcache, windowssystem32 and windows. (windows may be winnt on some OSs) Protected system files should always have a copy in dllcache.

3) Delete the copy in dllcache first, then work you way up the tree, deleting the system32 copy next.

4) Replace the file you deleted with the ones want to use.

Thanks! Iprefer metapad, and was only able to replace notepad in system32. Then I edited all my commandopenC:windowsnotepad.exe registry entries to ~system32notepad.exe. Clunky, but it worked. Your way sounds much better.
