Hey, valuable members of this valuable board,

I’m sorry for this one but… how do you show inserted images in a Word document?

Initially, I thougth it was a ‘real problem’: while transferring our clients’ files, I found out that some Word documents show only blanc objects (example in attachment) where there should be images instead (or other objects, perhaps, inserted there by our client but somehow invisible at my pc). It happened with several, mostly large documents (several Mb) from different sources. In one case, I could view (slow!) the content (image) by editing the object. In another crase Word just hung. I don’t know whether it is due to different Word versions, Word or view settings,… Now, however, when I tried to insert a small jpg image in Word myself (insert – picture – from file), I got the same result: a blanc rectangle. So it should be quite simple… I hope…

What am I doing wrong?

Tools>Options>View Tab. If you have “Picture Placeholders” checked, then an empty box (instead of the graphic) will be displayed.

p.s. The corresponding option in Dutch is not “Fixeerpunten object” (which seemed the most apt!?) but “Tijdelijke aanduidingen voor figuren”!
BTW: wouldn’t that be fun to have ‘at hand’ at the lounge: a link to an existing Office terms (from menu’s, commands, options etc) translation table or engine?
Jan-Karel Pieterse designed already quite a handsome Excel-file with translations for menu items, but an on-line source would be even more great. Bringing people together . Though, the added value would probably depend on how many (other) loungers (have to) work with non-English versions (which might cause them having trouble so now and then finding out ‘what option/menu would this be ‘)…

Which illustrates the more how you’re sometimes better off guessing than relying on literal translations . Lucky me there weren’t but two possibilities – thanks, Hans!

I hope someone comes up with an answer for you on this one. We have had the same trouble with some of our documents (show placeholders is not checked). It seems to be some sort of document corruption, but as yet we haven’t been able to find a fix other than reinserting all the images.

Hi Karen:
While having show placeholders is checked is the usual cause of this behavior, there can also be other causes. Are the images linked, embedded, or both? You might be able to select the image, press Alt+F9 to show field codes & then press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink the images. If you can post a portion of a document that displays the problem, someone might be able to look at it (of course, this won’t help with images that are linked, as the source will not be available).

Hi Phil,

So I had posted here earlier. We tried all the suggestions EXCEPT using Snagit. We are often working on client sites and there network security does not allow installation of software so we need a solution which just uses Office and Windows features.

We have played around a fair bit with inserting screenshots trying to get a good compromise between file size and quality. The current process we use is – take the image into paint, crop it or what ever, copy to the clipboard. Then paste the picture using the following macro:

‘Macro updated 17 December 2002
‘
Selection.PasteSpecial link:=False, Placement:=wdInLine, DisplayAsIcon:=False, _
DataType:=wdPasteMetafilePicture
Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1, Extend:=wdExtend
With Selection
.Fields.Unlink
.Borders.OutsideColor = wdColorBlack
.Borders.OutsideLineStyle = wdLineStyleSingle
.Borders.OutsideLineWidth = wdLineWidth050pt
End With

End Sub

So images should be unlinked.
