    Situation:
    – Excel worksheet with 5 rows at the top – formatted like page titles
    – data is entered in rows

    Problem:
    – first 5 rows (headings) have different column widths than the data rows

    Workarounds Tried:
    – created separate workbook with one sheet – just containing the headings.
    – attempting to insert the headings into original file as an “Object” – but object is truncating headings on the right
    – attempt to insert two smaller objects side-by-side… 2nd object moves after the file is saved (result: space between the two objects)

Any ideas? Headings need to be editable. (not possible to convert to Word & use tables)

      Clare,

Sounds like you need to “Auto-Fit” the columns.
Select the columns in question then (on the Menu bar) go to: Format | Column | AutoFit Selection.

Clare attach a shot of your spreadsheet. I can’t picture a 5 row heading being part of a desireable table design. (must be less than 100kb)

      You might try this:

      – insert a second sheet
      – copy the headings to there and format the way you like them
      – Select the heading on the second sheet
      – Hold the shift key and choose Edit, copy picture
      – go to the other sheet, selec twhere the pic has to go and press paste
      – Now select the picture
      – click once in the formula bar
      – type the equal sign and navigate to the heading on the second sheet
      – select the entire heading and press Enter.

Now you can edit and format the header on sheet 2 and adjust its width on sheet1.

        Hi Jan,

Thank you for the procedure – it may be able to work but… I got an error: “The picture is too large and will be truncated”. I checked on MS TechNet and didn’t find any articles that might explain this. Do you know of any limites to the size of pictures?

The headings on the 2nd sheet are 5 rows deep and from column A – BA (all columns widths = 3).

I have attached the file for your review…

If it says Too large, I guess there is nothing we can do about it.

One workaround would be to have multiple smaller pictures next to each other, e.g. consisting of ranges of the size as the are shown on the printout. But I doubt this is going to be very “workable”. I would suggest reconsidering this design.
