• Insert Word doc to Excel (Excel97)

I am attempting to insert an object from a file, a multi-page word document, into an XL workbook and all I get is the first page of the word doc. I get the same result if I copy & paste special as a word doc or as a picture (enhanced metafile). The graphics don’t paste if I try to just paste the document into excel. Is there a way to get the each page of the word document without having to copy it page by page?

    Thanks,
    cg

Can you explain why you want to do this? Perhaps someone will have an alternate solution.

      Cheers

Thanks for the interest, WebGenii. I have an assortment of related word docs and xl files that I would like to incorporate into a single, master xl file. The word doc’s include graphics and I’m trying to avoid recreating them in xl. Alternate solutions are welcome!

I don’t think including a Word document in an Excel spreadsheet is a very good idea. I’d do it the other way round: include tables and/or charts from the Excel spreadsheet in the Word document.

Another possibility is to use Microsoft Binder (although I’ve never been a fan of it). A Binder is a container document that can contain Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. A Binder can be printed as if it is one document.

I’d agree with Hans. You are letting yourself in for a lot of annoyance – stuffing word docs into excel.

Resurrecting this old thread, somebody just sent me what initially appeared to be a multipage embedded Word document. So I jumped in to find how they did it, and doh, they embedded the same doc four times scrolling each embedding to consecutive pages so it looks like a continuous document, and I assume they carefully lined the embedding positions up so it looks like a single document, but it’s definitely four embedded Word objects pointing to the same doc, one for each page.

Another one for the “why didn’t we think of the obvious” tip sheet. grin

Hey! How do you do that? In Word/Excel2000 and XP the same problem.

            In word, select all, copy.

In excel, insert object – word doc, then paste. So far, so good.
Move down on worksheet and insert another object and paste.
Both object show page 1 of word doc.
Doubleclick obj2, scroll down to page 2, click outside the box
and POOF, it jumps back to display page 1.

I found that by fooling with Format Object, Size and negative cropping,
the page can look just like in word, and by dragging the bottom down, it can even show the word footer, but no luck getting it to stay on page 2.

My reason for wanting this is to edit my userguide in word, with nice formatting and style thingies, implant it in my fantastic excel macro which can be delivered to the client as a single file with the userguide showing up on the worksheet when then open it.

All nicely contained in one file.

            Any ideas?

Ahem, it wasn’t done the way I thought. What you and I have been doing is posting the entire document through the Insert Object dialog, and browsing to the Word file. That method doesn’t let you show any page other than the first, and you can only display the object the size of the first page.

Here’s how to do what I think you want:

Copy, -page by page- from the Word document, switching to Excel and back, and at each location in Excel you wish the page to appear, paste it through either

              1. “Edit, Paste Special, Microsoft Word Document Object” and check the Paste button, or

              2. “Edit, Paste Special, Microsoft Word Document Object” and check the Paste Links button

The Help states that checking Paste Link inserts the document so that changes are reflected, but in my test, checking Paste allowed the link to update and checking Paste Link did not. One of us is confused, probably me. I think that for the purpose you need this done, you don’t need it linked.

              Hope this helps.
