I see indicators for NumLock and CapsLock, but is there any way to tell if you are in insert or overtype mode?

I seem to recall that that was there at some point, but I can find nothing now.

Chuck, is this in Word that you’re seeing those indicators? If so, EXACTLY which version of Word?

By including this info, the moderators can place this question of yours in the proper place here on AskWoody amongst all the forum topic areas and you can get a correct response fairly quickly.

I’m sorry Bob… Yes, it is in the Word footer where it shows indication of the Insert status

Right-click bottom status bar and select Overtype.

        @b

Just to “expand” Chuck’s question a bit further, is there a way to make “overtype” the de-facto default that is set automatically every  single  time  that Word is opened, no matter if you’re clicking on a document that needs Word to open it, or you’re opening Word to a blank document/template to create a new document?

Just asking because I do recall older word processors that would operate in overtype mode by default instead of insert mode, and I figured that there might be some folks out there who preferred this “way” of working with a document instead of the insert mode.

        Just some visual clarification:

        Before Overtype:
        Before-Ovetype
        After Overtype:
        After-OverType

Now clicking the Insert/Overtype will switch the selection.

      Yes,
Open the Normal Template using the Open function of a Word document.
      Turn on the Insert function
Save the file using the save icon on the top left of the Word document.
This is an edit function of the Word window that opens all Word documents, so all documents will open with the insert function already turned on by turning it on in the Normal template.

Insert mode is the default anyway.

That last request was for Overtype mode to be the default.

That’s at File, Options, Advanced, Editing Options, Use overtype mode.

So, once those steps have been followed, will overtype now be the de-facto default for all documents opened from that point forward, or will the setting be “forgotten” by Word once that individual session is ended and Word is closed and the computer is shut down?

My goal with the question was to see if there is indeed a setting that can be applied and that will survive a restart of Word and a restart of the computer as well; basically for that to be the permanent input mode unless changed by actions of the user.

            Forgotten after Word is closed.

Apparently not possible, but unlikely to be required permanently.

Yes, Insert is the default mode; but I was referring to the Insert/Overtype switch. I should have explained it better or said turn on the Insert switch function.
Selecting Use overtype mode in Word Options only applies to the current opened document and will revert to Insert mode on any other document and even the current document when you close and reopen it. Selecting this Use overtype mode option will not save even in the Normal template. Thus there is no way to have a document open with Overtype turned on, but you get almost the same thing with the Insert switch function.
There are two separate Insert switches:
      1) Right click the bottom border of of a Word document and click Overtype from the context menu. This causes the word Insert to appear in that bottom border and the document will function in the Insert mode. Click this Insert word and it will change to the word Overtype and the document will be in overtype mode. Add this Insert/Overtype switch to the Normal template and every document open in this Word app will now open with that switch at the bottom of the document, but the switch will always open to the Insert word and function. One click of the word Insert and you are in Overtype mode until you close the document or click the switch back to Insert. Not overtype by default, but very close with only one click.
2)In a Word document select File>Options>Advanced>Editing options and place a checkmark next to Use the Insert key to control overtype mode and OK to save the changes. The keyboard Inert key is the switch between Insert and Overtype modes. This setting can be saved in the Normal template so this key will be active when any Word document is opened in this Word app. Not default, but press one key after a document opens and you are in overtype mode.
I like method one above because I can tell in the document which mode is on by the Insert/Overtype word at the bottom.

Actually, I most often use the highlight and type to replace method rather than overtype method.

These statements do not appear to be true according to my tests.

Overtype mode when enabled remains for any new or opened document.

I can’t see any point in saving the setting to the Normal template.

    • #2698546

Overtype mode when enabled remains for any new or opened document.

Overtype mode will continue only on the current session of Word and any documents opened while that session is opened will open with Overtype mode.  Close all the Word documents so that Word session has ended.  Open a new or any Word document and the document will open to the Insert mode.  Also upon opening a new session of Word you will see that the Use Overtype mode option is not checked.  Word deleted the setting when all the current open Word documents were closed and the session was ended.

I can’t see any point in saving the setting to the Normal template.

For method one (Insert/Overtype at bottom of document), saving to the Normal template is necessary.  For method two with the option to use the Insert key on the keyboard, you are right and it doesn’t need to be saved to the Normal template (over kill on my part).

For method one (Insert/Overtype at bottom of document), saving to the Normal template is necessary.

Once the Insert/Overtype mode indicator has been selected for display on the status bar, it’s always there for any future document; so no need to save to Normal template.

        • #2698615

Once the Insert/Overtype mode indicator has been selected for display on the status bar,…

In my “expanded” question, I was referring to the mode for text input, NOT the indicator at the bottom of the screen.

    • #2698626

Well, after a preponderance of the evidence presented, it seems as is there’s no easy way to put Word in “overtype” mode and have it “stick” from one Word session to another, as Word “forgets” the setting when it’s closed and opens back up with the “insert” mode active.

As mentioned above, it’s easy enough for most folks to just press a button on their keyboard or click a setting that’s already on the screen to go from insert to overtype. My thanks to Dana and @b for your efforts to illustrate ways someone can implement the overtype mode of text input for the duration of a Word session.

Since there appears to be no easy way to have the setting “stick” from one session to another, then perhaps there a setting within the registry that can achieve a “lasting” effect of having overtype the default setting from one session to the next. Any takers??
