Inline Headings (Word97)

All things are possible in the Land of the Lounge, how about Inline Headings –

For example: Heading Some text….

The heading needs to show up in the TofC correctly. I did manage to apply a Heading to a paragraph and then revert the remainder of the text to normal style. But the TofC gizmo includes the whole paragraph.Ho Hum.

You can apply only one paragraph style to a paragraph, and it always applies to the entire paragraph. You can apply manual formatting and/or character styles to parts of a paragraph, but not paragraph styles.

You may have succeeded in making part of your heading look like Normal, but the Table of Contents looks at the paragrapgh style that has been applied to the paragraph as a whole…

You could create a heading style that uses the same font as Normal, and then use character formatting for the word or words that need to be bold.
The trouble with this is that the TOC will include all the words in the paragraph.

You could use bookmarks, and then build your “TOC” manually, including a cross reference to the bookmark text and a separate cross reference to the bookmark page number. If this isn’t clear then post again and I will create a simple example to show what I mean.

It’s not exactly elegant or on par with the advice I’ve seen here from others, but I’ve dummied up something that looked like hanging text in-line headings by using the table feature in concert with template-defined heading styles, and the TOC feature.

Column 1 cells contained the headings – each tagged with rhe appropriate heading level style. Column 2 cells contained body text formatted paragraphs. Some tweaking of cell width and formats were required to make the copy look like hanging indents, and to make the headings and body text paragraphs line up properly. However when printed the final result was a reasonable facsimile of the look I wanted, and the headings were picked up when I generated my TOC. Again, not elegant or ideal – but good enough for what I was doing.

The standard workaround for this problem (at least in legal circles, where it pops up frequently) is to type the heading with the heading style applied. Then insert a paragraph mark at the end of the heading. Apply Normal or Body Text or whatever non-heading style you want to use to the resulting new paragraph and type the paragraph text. Then select the paragraph mark at the end of the heading and directly format it as hidden text. Because the separating paragraph marker is hidden, when you turn off the show/hide button, or when you print the document, the text of the paragraph will begin on the same line as the heading. But, because the hidden paragraph marker exists, you actually have two separate paragraphs, and only the heading styled paragraph will be picked up in the Table of Contents.

You may be pleased to know that this problem (a maddening one with a functioning but annoying workaround) has been resolved in Word 2002 with something called a style separator, which functions as the hidden paragraph marker does but can be inserted with one keystroke combination. Much, much better.
