Should you have issues with the OS or something isn’t quite working as intended and an image restore doesn’t help, it’s always good practice to do these checks before submitting a support post for askwoody troubleshooting,
It’s as easy as a,b c…with a bit of time.

Firstly, save your work/ data and close running applications to achieve minimal disruption whilst executing commands.
TIP: You may wish to backup your personal data at this point..

Note: Timescale, allow good time to complete as this is hardware dependant, i.e. will longer to complete on older devices.

TIP: In order to ‘Run as Administrator’, right-click the respective shortcut whether Cmd prompt or Powershell and input your password.

    (a) Checking and fixing the storage device integrity:
Within a Cmd prompt (Run as Administrator) and input the following:

    chkdsk /f

A system restart is required to invoke the chkdsk at start-up.
(which takes a while to finish..)

    (b) Refresh/ Clean-up of OS Image:
Note:must be internet connected for this next command:
Within Cmd prompt or Powershell (Run as Administrator)
    and input the following

    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    followed by the [ENTER] key.

a good time for a human liquid refreshment..?

TIP: When DISM check is complete, do not close the open window in use.

    (c) Check filesystem integrity:
Within that open window, input the following:

    sfc /scannow

    followed by the [ENTER] key.

If violations are reported, close the Cmd prompt or Powershell window and restart the device ASAP so that the OS can self-heal during the restart.

if issue(s) still persist after a restart, do not hesitate to create a support query in the appropriate askwoody Operating System catagory.

    Windows 10

    Windows 11

TIP: If the issue(s) have been resolved, it would be a good time to create an image backup of the OS…especially when close to approaching ‘Patch Tuesday’s’.

      chkdsk /f

I have never used the /f switch; I always use the /r switch, which implies /f and also attempts to recover any data from bad sectors.  I found this much more useful when working with a client’s PC, as more often than not, a file or two could be recovered.

Also, you left out the command

      dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

This will cleanup the WinSXS folder.

TIP: If the issue(s) have been resolved, it would be a good time to create an image backup of the OS…especially when close to approaching ‘Patch Tuesday’s’.

Keeping drive images current pretty much eliminates the need for such troubleshooting; just restore the most recent drive image—it’s one and done, and less time-consuming.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Indeed it will, although the ‘you left out’ does not apply, as it’s outwith the scope of ‘self-troubleshooting’ as per thread title. doh!

Allow me to reiterate a portion of the original post:

something isn’t quite working as intended and an image restore doesn’t help,

Images can also carry forward issues, as experienced a while back on a friends self-built gaming PC, which was ultimately fixed using the above commands in order without issue. Then, and only then, was a new backup image created for his son.
Here endeth the lesson trusting any image blindly.
