    Some advice needed:

I want to have a group of files backed up here at work… it’s about nine different folders which house some scanned-in information which is not critical but is useful and which we add to daily.

I really don’t need the whole drive done (we do a disc backup on a weekly basis) but I want this one to be a separate backup to a USB drive just to keep the files updated as we go along…

Acronis TI looks a good choice but $50 is a lotta bucks for me… I was wondering what anyone would recommend?

    Simple incremental daily b/u software.

You might try robocopy. Its a command line tool that you can easily run from a batch file. I use it for file backups to USB and network drives. Its a free download as part of the Windows server resource kit if you are running WinXP. Its built into Windows 7.

Sorry, forgot a salient point: should be able to be used by Monkeys (the owners) who have trouble peeling bananas but who are convinced they are Torvalds re-incarnated.

      (There’a a reason I have no hair…)

Robocopy is best and free. Write a batch file that they can just double click.

      Code:
      robocopy sourcedirectory destinationdirectory /r:0

      cheers, Paul

Try Macrium Reflect. It is free and has gotten good reviews in these forums. I personally chose Acronis True Image Home 2010, but as you state it was $50.

It would be simple to configure your computer or whoevers computer to just backup the selected folders automatically with Windows backup. You select the folders and you select the destination (USB drive). You also select the frequency of backup and then you don’t have to trust that someone will do it…

Karen’s Replicator is free, efficient and highly recommended

Since the poster wishes to use this in a work environment, we should note:

Karen’s Power Tools programs are free for personal, non-commercial use. But if you’d like to use the programs at work, you need a paid license.

(E.g., buy the CD for about $30.)

MicroSoft’s ”SyncToy” is working for me for this sort of small non-critical data backup. I use it to back up every nite to a removable USB drive (as you want to) and, once you have satisfied the very short learning-curve, it works reliably, invisibly (well, almost…) and does exactly what I think you’d want.

SyncToy was just what I wanted. Simple, and almost fool-proof (except I have some EXCEPTIONAL fools to deal with!) operation. Setup took a minute to figure out but it was a very short learning-curve, as FK said.

The only problem being that I found it unable to run this moring when I came in… Apparently, “Close all the other programs”, hadn’t fuly penetrated the mush that our Office Manager (the Owner’s wife) uses for a brane. Once that ws done, SyncToy ran perfectly and will continue to do so (if, that is, the OM manages to remember closing things) on a daily basis.

Thanks to all who replied or suggested programs. I tried every one but SyncToy is exactly what I was looking for.
