I purchased the Windows 7 ESU license from Harbor Computer Services and followed the instructions and it returned “Product activated successfully”.

Yet when I would type in slmgr /dlv using an elevated command prompt it said License Status UNLICENSED.  I tried it several times and got the same results.

So I searched elsewhere for instructions and found out that the instructions Harbor Computer Services supplied were wrong.

In the final step HCS tells you to

    1.  Open an elevated Command Prompt
    2. Type slmgr /ato and press Enter.  That is incorrect.  It should be slmgr /ato ACTIVATION ID NUMBER and then press Enter.  If you look carefully at the screenshot they include you can see that they did that.  They just forgot to include it in the directions.

Hope that helps anyone with a similar problem.

Susan Bradley described this step more fully in her 12-23-19 post in the AskWoody Plus newsletter, “Hunting for an elusive Windows 7 ESU license.”

I got the license information (showing registered) with just slmgr /dlv.  So, technically, I wouldn’t say their instructions were “wrong” since they worked for me.

But, if others have the same issue you did they have an option to try that worked for you.

The instructions Harbor Computer Services worked just fine, as is,  for me, so I would not say they were wrong.

But, it’s good someone has an option that worked for you to try if they experience issues.

The screen shot shows what you are supposed to put in there.  The wording doesn’t have the complete info.  Also I’ve found that even when everything IS correct it sometimes has to be done again.  (more on that in an upcoming newsletter story)
