In the Template dialog box, how do you create a custom catagory? In addition to the tabs labeled General, Memos, etc. we want to have all our company templates under a tab labled “Company Templates”. We could do this in Word 97, Office 98, but cannot discover how to do this in Word XP, Windows XP. Any ideas?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 8, 2003 at 3:47 pm #692052Dear cmarion,
The Workgroup Templates location is designed to allow the users to share common project or company templates on a network. You can find out where Word expects these locations to be and change them if needed used Tools, Option, File Locations. You can introduce directories in here that will show up as taps on the File New Dialogue, note this will not go down further than one level so if you structure into directorys the sub directory contents will be show under the level 1 parent tab.
Another useful way round things can be to introduce a shortcut into either the Workgroup or user templates location this can then point to anywhere on the network . This is a neat trick if you can’t amend a network location without yards of bureaucracy, you will need to do it once on each user’s User template Locations directory then they are all set.
This attachement is an extract from notes I have collected over the years that relates to this.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 8, 2003 at 8:29 pm #692209It might well be there at the end of all of the default tabs set up by Microsoft, or on the More tab. If you don’t need those built-in templates, you can remove them (and their tabs) using the installer (Add/Remove Programs control panel).
