I am considering switching from Windows Mail to Thunderbird. If I don’t like Thunderbird after I use it a while, will I be able to transfer all the messages and address book back to windows mail?

    Thanks,
    Bill

As far as I can tell, you can use ImportExportTools to transfer the messages. You can export the address book to .csv format and import that into Windows (Live) Mail.

        Hans,

Yes, I see that ImportExportTools does have a EML file format choice for the Export output. I’m pretty sure that Windows Mail does use the EML format although Windows Mail also uses a WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file that apparently has something to do with the current set of messages. Do you know what is in that file? Does Windows Mail build that file automatically?

        Thanks,
        Bill

The MSMessageStore file stores information about the e-mail messages but not the messages themselves. Windows Mail will automatically update this file when you import messages.
