Format the column in the Excel file as Date and scan the first 35 rows or so to make sure that there are nothing but dates entered.

Another option is to resign yourself to importing the field as text, and subsequently go into Design view of the resulting table and change the data type of that field from Text to Date/Time. 10 to 1 that there is a value in that field that is keeping it from being imported as a Date/Time field in the first place, though. HTH.
