I imported an Excel file into Access. I opened the table in design mode so I could reduce the length of some of the text fields. I go to save the table and it says I don’t have enough memory. I was going to close everything that was open and then reboot. Will this be enough to let me change the field lengths and save the table? It has over 200,000 records.

I imported the Excel file into Access. I created a query where I use the Excel file and another linked Oracle table. I make this query into a table. In this table, I am trying to change the text field sizes from the default to a more manageable field size. I compacted, rebooted, closed everything but Access and I still get that not enough memory when I change even one field.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 4, 2008 at 7:15 am #1135900I copied the table and changed the field sizes. Now do I bring the original table into a query and change it to an update query. Would I bring in all the fields and where it says update to would I put the new table name? What is the syntax for the update table?
I am not sure how to get the data back into the empty table?

AskWoody LoungerDecember 4, 2008 at 7:31 am #1135912I take that back, an append query will do what you’re trying to quicker (assuming to create the new table, you copied the structure of the old, and then modified the field to suit you). Open a query in design view, and select your original table. Then change the query to an append query, and select your new table as the destination to append to. Drag the asterisk to the query data box, and the click the exclamation point. Hopefully that’s clear enough, I’m a much more visual person.
