I don’t always log in, so that threw me. Logged in and all is showing. If this shows up twice, this is my second time trying to post as the first time it didn’t post.

      Thanks Woody

@PKCano’s theory is that logged on users get sent to the correct server, while those who aren’t logged on get sent to a parallel universe – possibly the test server that’s been set up to get this site back up to speed. (We’ve been bobbing up and down for two months at this point.)

Clicking on the calendar in the lower right corner, moving forward to today’s date, may knock the site loose for those who aren’t logged in.

    • #145509

Woody, if I’m not mistaken, I believe the problem of not getting current postings if not logged-in started sometime between the 8th & 10th of Nov as I routinely browse “AskWoody” daily before my morning coffee & then again several times a day (being retired in Alaska) and I haven’t been able to see anything posted since the 8th until I discovered the “Nov-Oct-Nov” calendar work-around earlier today.  Hopes this helps you/your team narrow down what’s going on when not logged in.  Though I’ve been putting off registering (only discovered your website a few months ago), this is now my opportunity to make it official to ensure I’ll never be left out in the cold (pardon the pun) when it comes to keeping my Win7 & 8 systems running clean & secure.

      • #145523

Not sure if this helps but when clicking on the 1st,2nd or 3rd day on the calendar, only the old posts are presented and the calendar itself doesn’t show anything posted (days underlined) after the Nov 8th.  However, clicking on the 4th or any date after the 4th shows all of the current posts as well as an updated calendar.

I normally don’t bother to login and never stay logged in. So I was a bit surprised at the lack of activity and put it down some quiet time for veteran’s day. Anyway, I see that when I’m not logged-in using https://www.askwoody.com or https://www.askwoody.com/ gives the DDEAUTO November 8th as last post while https://www.askwoody.com/2017/, https://www.askwoody.com/2017/11/ or https://www.askwoody.com/2017/11/14/ gives this most recent post. When I click on the 8 in calendar of the page stuck with DDEAUTO November 8th as last post, the calendar is updated to show that now 14 can be clicked. So it seems to me that the home page is no longer being updated on the server.

I’ll use this opportunity to thank you once again and always for the effort you put into this site – you and your MVP’s. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am in no way put off by the issues the site has been having. Always look forward to your entries and forum responses.

I’m registered here as DrBonzo, but I haven’t logged in for the last 2 weeks (roughly), and yet I apparently can see everything. In other words, I see all posts/threads, etc, after Nov 8 and the DDEAUTO post. I’m using IE 11 on Win 7 x64 sp1, group B current on Win 7 and IE 11 updates through October.

Now that I’m logged in, I can still see everything but I have to do the “calendar trick” for every thread in order for that thread to recognize me as being logged in. And even with the calendar trick it takes a few minutes before I’m recognized as being logged in on a particular thread.

But, all things considered, a minor annoyance compared to the other benefits of this site.

It’s been going on longer than 8 hours.  For me, it started right after the DDE/ Word post several days ago.  Between that post and whatever time the next one should have arrived, it stopped working!  Even the times listed for posts (like “8 hours ago” for a post that was by then several days old) did not update.

I tried logging in to see if it would make a difference, and I guess it did, though by then I had forgotten that I was doing that as a test and I thought it had just started working spontaneously.  Heh.

We have been advised that this should be fixed now, with everyone seeing the same thing (fingers crossed).

I just tried as “anonymous” user on both FireFox 57.0 & iOS 11.1 and everything seems to be working now — kudos to whomever stayed up late to find the bug 🙂

I thought something had happened to you Woody. I found it weird how there hadn’t been any posts in nearly a week.

      Hi Woody,

No problems obtaining current content (Firefox automatically logs me in), but I’ve not gotten an email notification since 14 September; a few weeks ago, Kirsty had suggested that it might be specific to having an outlook.com address (though nothing’s showing up as junk mail, and AskWoody is on the Safe list). Are any others reporting a similar experience?

      Thanks, as always!

      • #145581

My notifications disappeared with one of the crashes as well. Someday….

Same problem with my outlook.com.  No notifications since 9-7-17. You can read this THREAD about what has been going on. I tried a gmail address and that fixed the problem. I went back to my outlook.com address and the problem returned. My avatar uses a outlook.com address, now I have a my avatar back, but no notifications. Kirsty has replied to my above thread and asked if the notification problem was fixed, I have replied as to the status but have not heard back from Kirsty. I started a thread on answers.microsoft.com about the problem and they are wondering if askwoody.com is getting bounced-back emails or getting an error message when trying to send a email to me. I have been waiting for that info so I can pass it on. I think with the problem they are having with the site at moment, might be why replies have not been delayed.

Sorry @sparky – I hadn’t ignored you, but I had highlighted the problem to Woody.
We are aware of the issue, but the fix isn’t something in our immediate toolkit.

    • #145640

Woody you had more problems with the website that Microsoft with their updates 🙂 lol. At least you are able to fix yours, they can’t!

    • #145645

Glad you were able to get it corrected, Woody.

By the way, it wasn’t about 8 hours ago (from the writing of your top post) that whatever it is went wrong. I’ve been noting the issue since around the end of last week.

In my experience, the problem also occurred “from end of last week”perhaps 9 or 10 Nov.  Curiously, about the same time, a Microsoft page (thing/wdsi/definitions) also went awol, lacking any updates to the malware definitions after version 1.257.359.0 on 11 November (Saturday) — and I thought this might be related.  That Microsoft page came back to date sometime Tuesday.  I initially wondered whether my ISP was caching some traffic too aggressively.  Glad to find both sites fixed.  Also, my most sincere regards to Woody, MVPs, and all contributors;  greatly appreciated.  HMcF.

… We’ve been bobbing up and down for two months at this point…

      Yes “we” indeed have.

And forgive me asking again, but are you sure, this is the right forum software to use?

I visit quite a good number of forums every day and only this one is so slow and unreliable…

Or: if askwoody forums was my Windows, I would so run Linux! 😀

If changing software is a matter of dollars, I’m prepared to donate a bunch.

The content on this site presents a value for me and guess most other visitors as well and it certainly deserves a better platform to be presented on.

      imho of course.

      • #145735

        I greatly appreciate it!

Yes, money is in very short supply. I’m basically breaking even on the site, monetarily, and (obviously) not real happy with what we have. Other bloggers face a similar problem, and I don’t think any of them  – except, perhaps, Thurrott.com – have figured out how to make enough to get the technology working right.

I could try starting a for-pay newsletter – something I’ve done several times before – but it isn’t at all clear if I could make enough to support it, and how much effort it would take. Besides, how would I choose between posting here, running ads and asking for donations, and making folks pay for the info?

        Any ideas?

Working fine for me now. Thank you, woody.

When not logged in, the normal log in boxes on the very top right hand side of the wood side bar is missing. When logged in I do not see my user name. The only way that I know of to get to my profile page is to find one of my post and click on my user name.  Problem happens on both Firefox and Chrome browser. When this started I noticed a white line square box wrapped around the normal log in boxes, that has since disappeared.

I clicked login, entered info and it said I was already logged in, so this post is just to see if that is so. I noticed ‘logout’ is not showing on the selection bar – that’s a bad omen.
      It’s NoLoki here.

Whatever the result – I’ll be back!

The cache problem seems not fixed. I logged into the site using Firefox Quantum, cleaning my history before, and still see only the posts until November 17th. I try IE, I see up to 21th.

I hit F5 on Firefox and then the posts appeared on the home page.

    • #149189

There is still a caching issue with the current site. My browser prefers to display cached information rather than new. I either have to use the calendar trick or clear my cache before going to AskWoody. I’m still using FF 56 with NoScript 5.1.7, planning to upgrade both soon.

I’m having the same problem. I’m using Chrome. When I log in I have to do a little manuevering to get to current posts.
