• IE8 – Links don’t work

I run W7 Home Premium, and use IE8. I get HTTP 404 errors when clicking on links,
whether it’s on a web page, in an email, etc.
I have run SFC /Scannow and it found no errors.
I ran Malwarebytes and found no errors.
I used Windows features to uninstall IE8, reboot, and install
    IE8 back again.
Microsoft offers a “Mr Fixit” for IE8 problems. I ran that and I
    have the same linking problem.

    I’d appreciate any help offered.
    Thanks,
    Dick
    PS,
I even went to the page offering a downlaod for the IE9 beta,
clicked on the download button, and got the same error.

Do you have an Image from beforre the problem started? Perhaps restore to that Image, then re-run the updates since then to see if you can isolate what happened. If you do get it working I would definitely recommend trying IE 9 beta. It is very stable, more secure and runs similar to Chrome 10 beta in my very unofficial speed tests.

Without a good Image, I suppose you could try system restore. Some of those of us that do create Up To Date Images have turned system restore off so hopefully one or the other of these might help.

If this fails, perhaps a repair install of Win 7 would help.

      Hi Dick, have you tried:-

      # Close all browser windows … open a “Command Prompt” from the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
      # (type) ipconfig /flushdns (press Enter) Then close the Command Prompt …

And just what does this do Roderunner”

So you can get to a site by pasting the address in the location bar, but not by clicking a link to that same address? That’s very odd.

Thanks all, for your replies. I did a W7 repair, and my problem is fixed.

Glad the Win 7 Repair Install worked. It seems like these odd ball type problems can be fixed with repairs. Is your Image Up To Date? this would have worked if your Image was made before the problem started as well.

      Hi Ted:
I agree about keeping images up to date. In my case. Murphy struck again. I keep 3 of them, but the oldest one
I had deleted, before creating the newest one, must have been the last good one before my mysterious problem
struck. None of the 3 images worked in clearing up my issue, which is why I did the repair.

A lesson I had learned a long time ago from Fred Langa, but had fallen into my memory’s waste basket, would have helped.
I highly recommend this to anyone doing a fresh install while converting to W7:
Do the installation, apply the updates, install your usual programs, and take an image to save “forever.”
Tweak your system, personalize it, and take anothe image. Save this one “forever” also.

If I had followed my own advice here, I would have saved myself some time and grief by being able to use either
image number 1 or 2 to fix my problem.

you haven’t tried resetting IE8 did you?

    • #1265524

Before I gave up and did the repair, I spent a lot of time as follows:
      ran sfc
      uninstalled IE8
      reinstalled IE8
used a Windows Club utility to reset all IE 8 DLL’s
Googled and followed-up on various suggestions, such as from the Windows Seven forums
      etc.

I dont even know why “repair” worked and fixed my problem, but I’m happy
      that I did.

For me, I’m finding that the more I play with and tinker with W7, the more time I spend fixing things.
For example, I once went through hours of tuning my boot process, and cut it from 91ms to 62 ms.
Then I treid one more thing, blew up, and spent 4 hours recovering. How many ms are there in 4 hours?

I think I’ll force myself to use the “KISS” principle, leave W7 alone, and find another hobby.

Please don’t, you’ll learn more by making mistakes, and you would be sadly missed on the forums.

My “expertise” came by reading articles, books and more importantly mistakes. (Some more than once!) However, I agree -sometimes that last tweak is one step too many.

Thank you for the kind words Roderunner. Knowing me I’ll be back at it sooner rather
than later. I also made New Years ‘ resolutions to diet and excercise, and you can probably
guess how that’s turned out so far.

IE8 connectivity issues (can’t open links, Error 404, etc.) are not always confined to the browser. This is why repairing the browser does not always solve the problem. Networking has components which go deep inside the Windows OS, and in particular, Windows Networking is an area which can become misconfigured. This situation is best resolved with a Windows Repair, as you have found out.

As for Windows tweaking to improve boot times, what’s a few milliseconds among friends?
