IE8 Can't/Wont Print (64-bit)

Help, I can’t seem to get IE8 to let me print.
I have Win7 installed, my default browser is Firefox, my printer is an HP 6500.
However, there are times that only IE8 will do. But, when I do use IE8, I can’t print anything through the browser … not email, not web pages, nothing.
I’ve searched the web for suggestions and have tried EVERYTHING that I can think of. Within the last 30 days I’ve even tried reinstalling IE8 on 3 different occasions hoping that that would do the trick … NOT !!!!
I can print through MS Office, I can print through Firefox, I can print anywhere I want … EXCEPT through IE8 …..

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What, if anything, happens when you try to print? Is there an error message? No printers listed in the Print dialog? Nothing comes out?

In Print Preview, does the page seem to be rendering correctly for printing?

Thanks for the quick reply. This is tending to make me just a bit zoo-e-er than normal.
When I’m in IE8 and try to print a web page (file>print or File>Print Preview>Print) the print box comes up, I select the printer (if not already selected), select the page range options if necessary, and the number of copies. Then I click Print and the box disappears as normal but nothing prints and there is no evidence whatsoever that anything was sent to the printer … nothing … no print icon in the task bar area, nothing in the printer que, nothing at all. I’ve even tried to reinstall the printer several times and/or selecting something else to print like the AIO Fax or my PDF print file setup.

JoeP I’ll try on bing as you suggested and I’ll let you know if I find anything.

Thanks … but I’m still frustrated. Except for this one problem, Win7 has met every expectation

I wonder whether any error is being logged to the Windows event log?

In earlier versions, you could start the Event Viewer using either:

[*]Start > (All) Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
Note: If Administrative Tools does not appear, right-click the Start Button and use the Customize dialog to add it to the menu.

[*]Start > Run > eventvwr {ENTER}

Not sure about Windows 7…

Jscher2000 ….. BINGO !!!!
In all my pfutzing around with this, I had completely forgotten about the event viewer.
Once I ran it I found that the print spooler was failing because it couldn’t find a HP Laserjet 4 ??????
I don’t know how/where/why the print spooler is trying to access a HP LaserJet 4, I’ve never had one, BUT at least now I can try to fix the problem.

Oh, by the way …to run the event viewer in Win7, just enter eventvwr in the Start Search window and the program will come up, click on the .exe file and you are in business.

FOUND AN ANSWER !!!!
Not a good answer (from my perspective) but an answer.
On the Microsoft Answers site forums (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx) I found what was almost my exact question.
The answer from an MS MVP was as follows “Printing is dependent on Active X Controls which aren’t supported (don’t work properly) in IE8 64 bit.”
Seems the key was that I could print in 32 bit IE8 just not the 64 bit version.

Sure hope MicroSoft gets a fix for this before EVERYONE runs away from IE8/9/10 whatever in favor of FireFox or Chrome or ????

64-bit IE8 has limited use right now. Most IE add-ins have not yet been updated to the 64-bit environment. There is nothing wrong with using the 32-bit IE. Currently, no one has a 64-bit browser in production other that Microsoft. This will change in the coming months so the add-ins for all browsers will get updated or dropped.

whatkind of webpage arre you trying to print? this is dependent with activex can you do a little ticking on your security tab alowing most active x. thanks and hope this helps.
