greetings one and all…
here i am again, asking, as usual, for help. just about the time i finally figure out the beast at home, i go out and buy a laptop, which runs vista home premium, and brings a whole new bunch of problems. here goes…
i have become accustomed to using firefox, so, when i bought the laptop (toshiba satellite P205-S6337), i used IE7 just to download firefox. no problem. a month and a half or so later, i had cause to want to use IE7. the beast (our main computer) was down, so my husband wanted to use the laptop. he’s used to IE, so off he went. he clicked on the IE icon, and got the following message:
Internet Explorer has stopped working.
the screen would attempt to open, and the cursor would just spin and spin and spin. the screen also told me something to the effect that microsoft would search for a solution and notify me if it could be fixed. ha! no such luck. the only way to get out of this, because the whole ‘puter wold lock up, was to do CTRL-ALT-DEL. that got to be a pain in the butt, so i told my husband to use firefox.
we finally got the beast running, so the laptop reverted to me. i ignored IE for a while, except that i attempted to download IE7, figuring that i could uninstall it from the laptop and do a clean re-install. microsoft refused to let me download IE7, telling me that it came with the computer that i was using. cheeky company and machine!
i ignored IE for awhile, except for, every time i would try to do an update or such, or try to follow a link, IE would attempt to open, to no avail.
a friend stopped by one evening and i told him about it. he started searching in the depths of the laptop, using task manager to check the processes. i guess the process usage was high, although the cpu usage was low to normal. he did a lot of cussing, then decided to start cancelling things out/closing them down. he (i’m not sure of the correct term here, so excuse me) closed down the activeX controls (i think it was), and then IE opened, and all seems to work right… except when i tried to do anything involving microsoft. then IE opens, but i get a pop-up bar across the top of the screen, telling me that microsoft wants to do something with activeX controls. didn’t have anything to write on for the exact message; sorry.
does any one have any idea why IE worked fine at first, then stopped? could it be jealous of firefox?
i also have two other problems, but they belong elsewhere. thanks for any help that you may pass my way. until the next time, take care and God bless.
