Hi loungers – relying on you as ever! I ran an update install on a prompt from Mcafee – I got an error message saying part of it conflicted with Avast which I am also running, but chose to ignore. Following this I cannot get explorer past the Google search screen – it freezes every time. I have so far tried to uninstall Avast, restore my PC back to a previous point last week (no avail) and even reinstall IE7.

I am now in a right mess, as Avast will not run as it says part of that is missing, Mcafee keeps telling me a file on the Privacy software is missing, and I can’t search on the net! aaaargh! Where do I go from here? (My Mcafee came installed on the PC, so do not have original software). Is there a known conflict with Mcafee/Avast? Is there a known problem with Mcafee upgrades? If you can answer any of this, please help!!!

I don’t know a solution to your problem, but if you mean the McAfee anti-virus program and Avast anti-virus program: it is not a good idea to have two different virus scanners active. They are bound to get into each other’s way and to cause conflicts. The same goes for two different software firewalls or for two different anti-spyware programs with a realtime protection component.

You might try starting Windows in Safe Mode (press F8 after booting your PC, before Windows appears) to see if you can get rid of either McAfee or of Avast.

ThX Hans, but no luck, as I have got in such a mess of restoring and deleting, it now won’t let me uninstall Macafee as a file is missing, and altho I have found my install disc, it won’t let me reinstall as it says I have a later version already!! I have at least managed to uninstall Avast, but this has not changed the explorer situation.

Update – I have found an option to run explorer without add-ons, and this lets me in as normal! Is it now just a process of elimination? There are some Macafee add-ons that I presume might be the culprits.

Great! Yes, I’d try enabling the add-ons one by one to find which one(s) cause the problems.
