I am using Windows XP home edition. Recently when I close IE6 the screen freezes. When I go to task manager, IExplore is still open. If I manually close it I get a warning that it might not finish what is was doing. If I end task on it my screen unfreezes and I can proceed. If I wait about 60 seconds which seems like an eternity, IE eventually closes and gives me back my system. I have McAfee virus checker but the Internet is not being checked. I have a cable modem connected to the @home service. Any ideas why there is this delay in IE closing down?

I have been running IE 6 since beta testing it and Windows XP. I have NOT seen any other report of you problems.
I will not and do not run McAfee on any machine.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 9, 2001 at 5:38 pm #557058Try going into the control panel and whatever they call the Windows Setup now – there is an entry for Internet Explorer, which you can un-check, then Okay each screen. Go back in the same way and put the check mark back in – that ought to do it!

The link in the Control Panel (which I couldn’t remember when I sent my last post) is called “Add or Remove Windows Components”. You can remove the check mark for Internet Explorer, click Okay, then go back in the same way and put the check mark back; this fixes many problems with that program.

If you have RealPlayer running it may be downloading, Windows Update may be also be doing something. A lot of software check in at home to see if there is a upgrade and or fix. Tell us more about your machine. It will help.
Are using the @Home software that was provided by your cable company?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 25, 2002 at 9:27 pm #566304McAfee Virus Scan, McAfee Firewall, Atomtime.exe, MS Outlook 2002 (part of Office XP), Cox Correct Connect (I used to use @home until they went bankrupt….Cox communications, my cable provider is now my ISP). I do not have RealPlayer…I use MS Media Player, The only application running with as noted in Task Mgr is Outlook.exe Under Processes there must be 45 .exe files.

As Dave mentioned some time back : have you tried removing anything called McAfee? This VS and/or firewall are well-known hazards to navigation. My suggestion would be to uninstall them completely. A good, free VS is AVG (which has an XP version and updates freely and frequently) and ditto for Firewall is Zone Alarm.
Also get hold of a disc (unless you’re broadband) and download and/or re-install IE6 (or re-install your OS ‘over the top’ of the current set-up from the CD).Click My Sig

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 24, 2002 at 6:17 am #565701I think I can help you. If you can’t find control panel go to Start | Search | and click on Files and folders and type in the words control panel. After you find it click on it and go to Add/Remove Programs. When the add remove programs comes up look to the left and there is a box that says Add/Change windows components. Click on that and you will see a list come up. Internet Explorer is on that list. Uncheck the box, close control panel and then reboot. Then go back to Control Panel AddRemove go back to the box that sayd Add/Change Windows components and put a check back in the box next to Internet Explorer and then reboot. That fixes Internet Explorer and it should not hang after that. Nancy

I did note that checking that box only gives access to IE with an icon on the desktop and an entry on the start menu. I don’t think it has anything to do with the actual IE files. It is my understanding that IE cannot be uninstalled from Windows XP a la Microsoft’s law suits.

Click Start button. In the middle of the left column you will see “Control Panel”. Click on it. In the middle of next screen you will see “Add or Remove Programs”. Click on it. Third icon from top on the left pane is “Add/Remove Windows Components”. Click on it. On the next screen, slide down list of the components untill you’ll see “Internet Explorer”. Uncheck it, then click OK, OK,OK to close all windows. Next repeat all operations cheking the box next to “Internet Explorer”.
It will reinstall IE on your machine. -

Before you post that others are wrong, you may want to consider that everyone has their own ways to find things. When the person who needed help couldn’t find Control Panel, I gave him/her the easiest way to find it, so please do not be so judgmental.

Unchecking the box and rebooting and then re checking the box and rebooting only REPAIRS Internet Explorer; it does not delete it. However, if you want to use another browser you can always download Netscape Navigator 6.2 and use it as your default browser. I have both and use both. In my opinion, however, IE 6.0 is better.

As far as other software updating: I do not have Real Player. These are the “Processes” going on: agentsvr.exe, outlook.exe, avconsol.exe, webscanx.exe, mcshield.exe. vshwin32 avsynmgr, point32, fast, taskswitch, directcd, pptd40nt, fxssvc, fast, nvsvc32, explorer, spoolsv, ssonsvr, svchost, mrtmngr, msoffice, lsass, services, winlogon, csrss, smss, atomtime, printkey, qwdlls, qbdagent2001, cconnect, rulaunch, ctfmon, cmgrdian, alogserv, tgcmd, qttask, system, system idle process. They are all .exe files but I got tired of retyping them. The only application that I have open is Microsoft Outlook 2002.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 27, 2002 at 2:06 am #566450I’d like to suggest that you try something to see if there are “conflicts of interest” on your PC.
Open MSCONFIG by going to Start > Run and entering MSCONFIG. Click OK. On the Startup tab, remove ALL checkboxes. This will give you a “clean boot” scenario. Reboot the computer and see if the problem still persists.
If it does after you disable all the startup items, it’s most likely a problem with Internet Explorer. If it behaves then you know that you have something that starts with your computer that is interfering with Internet Explorer. From the looks of the things that you have posted as running in Task Manager, there are a lot of non-essential applications and/or services running. I’ll suggest a good reference for what services you can disable – you’d be surprised at the memory savings alone. And it just might help your problem too.
I also haven’t seen anyone suggest a favorite standby of mine, running the System File Checker – enter SFC /SCANNOW at the run prompt (and find something else to do for a while).
Try the clean boot and let us know what happens.
