IE10 constantly crashes

I don’t normally use IE but for those few sites that just won’t work with anything else, I keep it around. Anyway, downloaded and installed IE10. Big Mistake!!! Right from the start it kept giving me messages that it “stopped working” and would have to restart. Tried everything that I could think of to fix it but finally gave up and uninstalled IE10 and reverted to IE9.

This is just for info but, if anyone has a good fix, I “might” try it again

I too installed I.E.10 for Win7, and am experiencing the same thing. “Script Errors” etc. Pages not rendering correctly even with the compatibility turned on, tabs jumping from one position to another. I tried out an earlier version and got the same results, so I uninstalled it. I thought by this time things would have gotten better, but they haven’t. I for one am going back to I.E. 9

Seeing how much MS has tried with IE and how it still lags behind, not really sure what to think about the possibility of IE becoming my default browser again. Doesn’t look likely.

Your problems may be related to a faulty update from Microsoft(KB2670838).
See the post under windows 7 titled internet explorer has stopped working.
I had some of the same problems but after uninstalling this update they went away.

I installed the preview version when it came out but eventually uninstalled it due to mostly compatibility issues.
after installing the final version other than needing to use the compatibility mode a few times I haven’t had any of the problems I had with the preview version.

Seeing how much MS has tried with IE and how it still lags behind, not really sure what to think about the possibility of IE becoming my default browser again. Doesn’t look likely.

I use IE 10, Firefox, and Chrome interchangeably. Frankly, I no longer see any significant difference between the three with the exception I have to use compatibility mode on a few rare web sites.

BWC: Already had Microsoft(KB2670838) installed when i “upgraded” to IE 10 but, based on your note, I uninstalled it, reinstalled IE 10 (for Win 7) and then reapplied the MS update. Result= absolutely no hoowah, no change from original crashing, etc. So, I’m back to square 1 and IE 9 (for those few occasions that nothing else will work). Thanks for the suggestion, it was worth a try.

To all other replies. I really wasn’t trying to start a war over how good/bad/indifferent IE is or is not in comparison to any other browser. As I noted in my original post “I don’t normally use IE but for those few sites that just won’t work with anything else, I keep it around” . That is just MY personal preference.

You said you uninstalled KB2670838 and reinstalled IE10. Did you try IE10 before reinstalling KB2670838? On some systems KB2670838 was the problem not IE10.

I misspoke above. I uninstalled KB2670838 and then reinstalled IE 10 for Win 7 and it is/was IE10 for Win 7 not IE 10 Preview. But did not reinstall KB2670838. In fact I still haven’t reinstalled it based on y’alls comments. Still had the constant IE 10 crash problem. Guess IE 9 will stay on my machine for quite a while longer. It isn’t like I use it regularly or even often.

I have 64-bit Win 7 Pro SP1 installed. I’ve installed 64-bit IE 10 a couple of times, both by Windows Update and from the downloaded file. It simply will NOT display images. Uninstalling it automatically reloads IE 9, which behaves properly. I’ll stick with 9.

Following from IE9, assume you can find same in IE10 settings. Internet Options > Advanced tab
…try these one at a time, Apply, OK, close browser, reopen…
Multimedia section, is “Show Pictures” ticked? If yes, untick. Then when you reopen browser, tick it again–may just need a ‘kick’.
Multimedia section, change setting of “Enable auto image resizing”
Accelerated Graphics section, change setting of “Use software rendering instead of hardware…”

In software troubleshooting, it’s always worth a shot as one of the ‘easy things to try’ to disable and reenable whatever’s causing trouble. Just cos the interface says it’s ‘on’ doesn’t necessarily mean it is.

Is browsing always slow in Internet Explorer? Does it frequently freeze or crash? Do you receive error messages that say Internet Explorer has “encountered a problem and has to close”? Or messages that a Visual C++ “runtime error” has occurred in Iexplore.exe?

If this is the case, you might want to try resetting Internet Explorer. When you reset Internet Explorer settings, all add-ins and customizations are deleted. You basically start with a fresh version of Internet Explorer.

I use IE exclusively and like it. In fact I have had issues with FF and Chrome to a point I uninstalled them. They just did not work the way I liked. Perhaps I am just accustomed to IE and it’s idiosyncrasies.

No, I wasn’t, and the update to IE 10 via Windows Update began late yesterday, if I remember correctly.

Trying to get IE 10 installed and working properly has been an exercise in futility. I have tried several ways to install it in Windows Normal Mode, but the installation always stalls out about 2/3 of the way along and finally gives me an error message stating that IE 10 did not install correctly.

The only way I’m able to get a completed installation is in Windows Safe Mode, and then, after rebooting into normal Windows, IE 10 won’t display images. Even after resetting it, as suggested by Jose, images are not displayed. Fortunately, uninstalling IE 10 reactivates IE 9.

I’ve never used IE, in any version, as my primary browser, as it has always been a disappointment when compared to the almost infinitely configurable Firefox, my browser of choice. Consequently, I use it only when Firefox runs into a website that doesn’t play nice with it. For that, IE 9 will suffice.

John, did you get the 64x or 32x version? 32x is worth a shot on a 64x PC, has generally been more stable in recent years while 64x apps get over teething. Or if you got 32x, try 64x.

When you install the X64 version of IE you get both the 32-bit & 64-bit versions.

Another warning re IE10 for Win 7 final release; if you have a LAPTOP running switchable graphics there is a bug that can cause kernel based BSODs. As I understand it, if IE is locked into not using hardware acceleration you may be able to avoid the problem. I’ve been informed by MS that they are aware of this problem and is working on it. For now I’ve removed IE10 from my laptop (but kept it on a desktop I built).

A note – I just read the latest PatchWatch – Susan actually covers this problem very nicely. My DV7 is on the ‘hit’ list. So maybe Windows Update won’t force it on me – however, the official IE download site had no warning when I did the download, and the installer obviously didn’t check to see if I had a hardware situation where IE10 wouldn’t work. Hopefully MS is doing something about this pending an actual fix. So thanks Susan! And while I’m a bit annoyed that I got hit by this, it’s nice to see MS openly and quickly documenting the problem.

Sorry, but I’ve had the same experience as Chinook. This is a Win7/32 system and when I installed Win7 as a CLEAN install last fall, initially I upgraded IE8 to IE9 after the system had been configured and updated with all the system updates. IE9 was unstable, crashed, couldn’t open many web sites (about half) that IE8, Firefox and Chrome had no problem with. So I pulled IE9 and reverted back to IE8.

Now I’ve tried to upgrade to IE10 and gotten the exact same results. It is unstable and unable to render web sites that the other browsers (all updated and current) or the older IE8 render with no problems at all.

Someone at Microsoft isn’t doing their job, there’s no reason IE9 or IE10 should be crashing regularly when it encounters web sites that the other browsers have no problem with. It isn’t worth the trouble of installing and uninstalling it–which will of course also purge any stored passwords you have.

Interesting. On the sites that I used IE10 on with a desktop system, it seemed to work quite well with Win 7 Pro 64 bit. It was on a laptop – Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit with dual Intel and ATI graphics that I had BSODs. Maybe you could tell us what sort of problems and crashes you had. In my case, MS has publicly acknowledged the problems with dual graphics but has no ETA for fixes. As to IE9, I’ve been using it a fairly long time now, though not as my primary browser.

BTW, I’ve had equally bad problems with Chrome on my laptop AND on older desktop systems. Chrome and ATI drivers don’t seem, for me at least, to live and play well with each other. On both desktops and a laptop with ATI graphics I’ve had TDR errors in the ATI driver, which generally lead to BSOD’s. I’ve also had problems using Chrome with GMAIL and other web sites where I do uploads and downloads; these file activities tend to crash the browser (a fairly well documented problem). Like IE10, the only system Chrome seems to do well on is my fast desktop with NVIDIA graphics.

I found a solution for IE10 crashing right after it’s launch. The problem was with “ClearType workaround files” detoured.dll and dwrite.dll, which you have copied there at some point when using IE9. Those files are in IE program files (x86) folder. So delete those 2 files and IE10 should now work fine!

Also, workaround for the crash was to enable software rendering (instead of hardware rendering) in IE ‘Advanced settings’. But when deleting those 2 files mentioned earlier, you can now use hw-rendering again.

Just a warning; this may help some people, but it has nothing to do with, as far as I know, the ATI switched video BSOD’s that come when you do the platform update and IE 10 installation on laptops with ATI / Intel switched video. Microsoft has made it very clear that these updates are not compatible with the laptops detailed in the list with this graphics setup. It includes various Dell, HP and presumably other laptops as well. If you do these updates without new drivers and fixes from ATI, your computer vendor and MS, you will likely BSOD in a fairly nasty manner.

Again, just a reminder that there are 2 different issues. IE10 crashing, and IE10 plus video drivers causing BSOD’s. Great to have workarounds for the former, still waiting for fixes from MS and ATI/AMD on the BSOD fixes.
