IE 5.5 SP-1, yes or no?

I remember reading that Woody wasn’t recommending this version of IE. Is that still his current recommendation? I’ve got version 5.5 SP-1 installed at home on my Win2K machine without problem, but when I initially tried it on my office machine (Windows 98, working with NT and Netware servers), it fouled up my Internet connection, and I had to uninstall.

Yup, that’s the latest word from Woody. If you value the Detect and Repair feature, that is. IE5.5 SP1 breaks this little feature, and it’s annoying.

IE 5.5 doesn’t really add anything but a print preview feature anyway. It’s kind of a useless upgrade….don’t be fooled by the versioning. I think of it more as IE 5.2, developer’s edition.

Thanks for your prompt response. One would think that one Microsoft product like SP1 wouldn’t break another, like Office Detect & Repair.

One would think, yes, but then it’s also true that the people who write Microsoft’s software put their pants on one leg at a time just like you and me. All in all, I findit amazing that some of their things work at all given the diverse number of people, computers, and other variables that go into this.

I installed it and now I get Explorer has caused an error in kernel32.dll and it crashes. How do I uninstall it & go back to 5.0?

How do you uninstall it. It’s really fouled up my internet connection and I keep getting an error message then it crashes!

I backed off to IE5.0 simply by uninstalling IE5.5 using the Add/Remove Programs control panel. It seems when you upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 it keeps the old stuff around in case you need it again (maybe Microsoft was anticipating problems? ).
