Is there a way to put an icon on a desktop which opens a new document using a specific template. We have a workgroup template for a travel request form and would like users to be able to click on a desktop icon and open the form.

If you’re asking will it work to have it there, yes, you can put a shortcut or link to a template on the desktop and clicking it will open a document based on the template. Since it’s a shortcut or link and not a copy of the template, it will always go to the current version.

If you’re asking how to get it there without manually putting it there, I’m bowing out.

In Explorer, click on the template, thencopy it. On the desk top, right click, and select “Paste shortcut”.

You might also want to have it available when the user chooses “File New”. Copy a shortcut to the directory showing under “Tools, Options, File Locations, User Templates”

For multiple ways to access templates (including shortcuts) see a Templates Menu for Microsoft Word.
