The problem is the block message keeps coming up in the bottom right corner of the desktop sometime several times a day – how can I stop the error messages?

      Allow it?

It’s quick and easy to unblock a Controlled Folder Access recently blocked app:

      1. Open Windows Security.
      2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
      3. Click the Manage ransomware protection option (under “Ransomware protection”).
      4. Click the Allow an app through Controlled folder access option.
      5. Click the Add an allowed app button.
      6. Click the Recently blocked apps option.
      7. Click the + (plus) button for the app you trust and want to allow.
      8. Click the Close button.

My Controlled Folder Access is always on.

Thanks for your response but my issue is this app is already allowed…

I think there is a problem with Controlled Folder Access, as over the past month I have been getting multiple notices every day about something being blocked. Just started recently, and I have sen multiple posts here about it. Wondering if a recent update is causing issues? I have run multiple Defender scans and everything comes up clean.

Since this information came out in the newsletter, I activated  Controlled folder access, and get “error” messages constantly/ Most I recognize and allow, but some I do not recognize and am at a loss what to do. For instance, yesterday:

      App or Process blocked: pwsh.exe

      Protected folder: %common_appdata%\Microsoft\NetFramework\BreadcrumbStore\

I have no idea what this is or if I should allow it. What is “Breadcrumbstore”? Please advise me.

In future, how do I decide if I have no idea what the folder or command is?

        Ken,

PWSH.exe is the PowerShell Core executable. So something is attempting to start powershell. If you have never used powershell the default ExecutionPolicy is Restricted which will not allow any powershell script to run.

If you want to change this you can start PWSH.exe as Admin then enter the command:
        Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force

This will allow powershell to run scripts on the local machine as long as they haven’t been downloaded from the internet. If downloaded you would have to UnBlock the file before you can run it.

Breadcrumbstore will be an app you installed.
Are there any logs in that folder that give you a clue as to which app?
Have you checked the installed apps list? (Settings > Apps)

      cheers, Paul

Where do I find that folder? What do the % signs mean?

No app in list or control panel programs list.

BreadcrumbStore is a normal part of .NET framework, it’s where all the breadcrumbs are stored.

And no, that’s not a joke, it’s actually a real thing!

Those % are a special characters used “around” Window’s path ids (in this case %common_appdata% = C:\ProgramData)

So the actual location is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\NetFramework\BreadcrumbStore

Thank you! Is there a common way to decipher the % signs? How does %common_appdata% become C:\ProgramData? I knew they meant some abbreviation, but figuring out from what in each case is puzzling.

    • #2440916

The % means it’s an “environment variable”.
      To see these:
      Open a command prompt
      Type: set

To see a specific variable use the first letter(s) of the name.
      Type: set a

      cheers, Paul
