    That’s it!

I will never ever ever never ever never upgrade my windows. This includes security or anything else!!

I have been using two home computers networked together by a router for about a year now. No problems.
I have automatic upgrade turned off. But from time to time go to the MS page and let it install the ‘must have’ security upgrades.
Then I saw on the page that soon I will HAVE to have the SP2 in order to use their page.

So……I took the plunge and installed sp2 on both computers. I did my wife’s first and the first thing that happened was I lost the network. But, wait I said, let me do mine and see what happens….

I have spent about 20 hours!!!!!!! trying to get a simple network between two computers….
I have searched here at woody every error message that I got. (and there were many) and googled until I wore out the mouse.
I read EVERY suggestion and steps to take and did EVERY one of them. I ran every wizard that I could muster up and find. (Most just stopped and said “sorry there has been an error, try again….)

Then hers started shutting down on its own every now and then.

I give up. I rolled them both back to before sp2 and without me doing a thing, BANG my network was back!!!

    NEVER AGAIN!

So My question. What happens if I NEVER upgarde to SP2?
Do the police come…… Do my computers melt donw in June…..

Sorry for the bad experience. Networking issues seem to be one of the common problems people have with an SP-2 upgrade.

No one can force you to upgrade. Your computers will continue to run. BUT sooner than later you’ll have to be on SP-2 to get fixes and addins for XP. Also, SP-2 really is much more stable and secure than SP-1 even though it may not seem that way to you.

1.) I’d still recommend you upgrade but start with doing a complete system backup of both systems.
2.) Look here Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and here Windows XP Service Pack 2 for much more information on upgrading to SP-2.
3.) I’d also recommend you not use Windows Update or Automatic Update to install SP-2. If you do not have an SP-2 CD, download the full version from: Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers and don’t be put off by the name.
4.) Be sure to check for SP-2 updates for your other software and hardware at the vendor sites.
5.) Only do one PC at a time. Make sure everything is OK before attempting the other. That way if you do have problems you can still easily post something here and get help.

        OK, OK,
I have calmed down a little. I did use the auto update and so WHEN I try again I will do the full version. WHEN……

It is just two computers connected by a little wire……………. But, I guess when I think back to me typing in a word processing program on my Commodre Vic 20…… It is a lot to ask for….

        Thanks for the suggestions
