    hello Loungers

Is there a lounge where people can ask security questions?

Like virus threats or bugs in Windows or Office, you know what is going on in Cyber space?

OK I get a HTML formatted message, and then when I open it via my Juno mail client software, ZoneAlarm tells me that Object 8000123a is trying to access the Internet, and if I should allow it.

I did a Google search on Object 8000123a but did not get any hits.

I have Ad-Aware on, and it did not detect anything so far.

I know that this is some sort of a picture or link on my message, but I still don’t know what it is doing?

Any clue as to how to find out? I also need to add that once I deny it access Juno software stops working and I have to it shut down and re-launch it?

Thanks for any hints. Oh BTW if there is no lounge, how do I start one?

      >> Is there a lounge where people can ask security questions?

Do you mean another place or a Forum within Woody’s Lounge?
If it is a general question, the General Windows Solutions would be the Forum.
If it is regarding specific software, I would suggest Software Finds and Wants.

      >> OK I get a HTML formatted message, and then when I open it via my Juno mail client software. . . . . Juno software stops working . . .

This does not appear to be specifically W2K orientated – I will move this thread to Other Browsers & Email Clients.

      >> BTW if there is no lounge, how do I start one?

Do you mean a Lounge or a new Forum within this Lounge?
The former will require webspace and software – search the Lounge Matters Forum for “software threads” for info on what is used here.
If you wish to propose a new Forum for this Lounge, that should be posted in Lounge Matters.
If you want to know why a Security Forum is unlikely to appear in Woody’s Lounge, do a search in Lounge Matters for “security forum”.

        thankyou Leif

Sorry for posting in the wring lounge, I did not know where else to post.

By a security lounge, I was hoping to find a lounge here at Woody’s lounge where one can ask questions about viruses, hackings, spyware, and the likes.

I am embarking on a career as a Computer Forensics Examiner, studying very hard, and I wanted to see if there was a lounge similar to what I have been studying.

OK as to the lounge, I guess I meant a forum. A forum is = to a specific subject, such as Other Browsers & E-mail Clients, or Excel, and the group of these forums is called a lounge. OK I got the syntax now.

I’ll do the search and see what has been done so far.

        Thanks for your help.

I don’t use Juno, so I have Mailwasher on the front end of my process. As for HTML messages, my take is, if it isn’t from someone I know and trust, I can it without even attempting to read it, because the liklihood is that it’s some kind of advertisement, even if not malicious. As to your first two sentences, I don’t think there’s any ONE place you can get ALL the kind of answers you’re looking for. That’s how come so many of us “visit” so many different places (i.e. newsgroups, forums, etc.) on the web. IMHO

        thankyou Big Al

I heard that Mailwasher will soon support Juno. My joy if that is true.

The one bad thing about Juno mail software is that it gives you the preview of a message by default and there is no way to switch.

        Thanks

This might be an ActiveX object. Is IE your default browser? If it is, you might look under Tools | Internet Options | Settings | View Objects and look for a match to that name.

      • #647424

        thankyou Dean

I followed your steps and all I found was Shockwave and Update Class.

Now I noticed that I had one of the oprions, to check for the updated version of pages, set to automatic. I changed that to when I visit the page.

I will see what that would do.

I like Juno, but because its free, you don’t get any technical support. I maybe forced soon to pay the $9.95 per month and get the premium service.

I have been rethinking your original post. I, too, run the juno mail client. I have since it was first released back in, oh, 1995 or so. You say that if you deny internet access to this object then the juno software disconnects you from the internet. This seems to me like the ad banner part of the software. I know that if it cannot find a path to the internet it shuts down the connection. This may also be why it disconnects when you close that ad bar.

To further postulate, I think that the object number you provided will change from time to time as the ad changes. Of course, not being part of their coding team I really can’t speak with any authority.

Allow me to ask another question. What happens when you view this email without having a connection to the internet? Does it attempt to dial automatically, produce the waring from ZoneAlarm, then display the message if you permit access and not display the message if you deny access? Regardless, I believe you are seeing Juno’s profit protection routines playing out. Bandwidth and software development are not cheap and banner ads pay very, very little these days. They have to get something in return for giving away bandwidth and software, and in this case it’s you viewing the ads.

Incidentally, I have used their premium service in the past and found it to be reliable and open. I have a need to use Citrix from home to work and Juno’s firewalls have that port open. MS Terminal Services, however, does not work.

          Good luck!

            hello Dean

Sorry for being late to answer you, I think you are onto something.

Yes when I deny this object access, then as long as I have that Juno session active, I can’t log on.

I will need to close Juno and then restart it again to make it work.

I am not sure if this is the ad banner. I checked the last time it happened and the ads were there. Maybe it was trying to update an ad, and when I restarted it did it automatically and that is why it works.

Strange, but I have asked Zone Alarm not to allow access and not to ask me for it. I will see what goes on. So far so good.

Can you view the source code for the message? If so, search for anything similar to APPLET or OBJECT to see if you can find the embedded object. If the message source involves FRAMESET tags, then the object reference may be in one of the pages referred to in the FRAME tags.

Generally speaking, there’s no reason to allow objects to run in e-mail. Instead, ask the sender what the heck it was and see if you wanted to let it play on the Internet or not.

        hello jscher2000

No. I right mouse click and it does not give any options.

I tried to save it as html and then scan through it using Notepad, but again the HTML code was not translated OK.

I have changed some of the settings in IE, and I am waiting to see what is the effect.

Sorry No can do on the source.

If I Righ-Mouse-Click I get a menu that does not have “View Source” or anything close to that.

Are you using Juno regular or Platinum?

      • #655596

        hello Bruce

I am still using the free Juno. I will upgrade to Paltinum very soon, just to get the Tech Support.

        Thanks

        Wassim

        • #655610

          Hi, Wassim ~

Please be forewarned that upgrading to Platinum just to get the tech support will disappoint you. I love Juno’s client and don’t ever experience software problems, security issues and am able to send/view pages you cannot in OE or OL, but the support you think you are going to receive is not going to happen. You will get access to tech support e-mail, but, frankly, is lackluster and very frustrating. In the end, the scripted info will save you time from having to search the horribly disorganized and outdated database for the proper answers to potential issues.

It is, however, definitely worth upgrading to Platinum as you will get a 10MB inbox, can send and receive e-mails that are around 6MB in size, none of those censored ads, a simple back-up applet, great access numbers & connection, nothing crammed down your throat and the stuff in which I spoke wonderfully previous and all at a price that is near a third less than competing DU ISPs for half the service/quality. You can also configure Juno to retrieve mail from other accounts once you have the service. Let me urge you to stay with the 5.033 Juno client and not to use the 6.0 version as that will require you to use OE or similar.

To address your original issue…..you didn’t say from who the HTML message was from, but my experience has been the “object” in question is merely Juno’s or an affiliate’s ad system loading or updating small ‘.swf’ and ‘.vbs’ files. My experience with Juno in the last several years has been that it does not encounter the type of security threats plagued by OE/OL as more people use those clients and thus are the targets of exploitation.

I am rambling here so I will close my pie hole for now – hope some of this helps. grin

            hello Bruce

Sorry for being tardy, I am way from home.

Wow good information about the premium Juno. I thought the $9.95 will buy me all sorts of headaches relivers headthrob bummer

I selected Juno for the very same reasons you did, plus the price is great.

The backup applet is different from the one in ver. 5.0? I have one that also does a great job in the Juno group. It was installed by default and it can backup Mail Assistants, the address book and the messages and all that.

Talking about Mail Assistants, how can one print the queries so that I can check them to makes sure they don’t overlap?

Ver. 6 seems appealing to me, but not any more. I am very intimate with ver 5.0 and upgrading might ruin that.

            <<>>

is that all from the premium or all Juno accounts can do that? I would like some info if you have any about setting this one up.

I do agree with you on all issues, I will scan my system and see if I can find a link between Juno and Object8000…

Thanks for all your help, keep up the good work, and stick around here, maybe there are more Juno users than we know about.

            Best Regards

            Wassim

              Hi, Wassim ~

If you go to ‘Help’ > ‘About Juno’ you will probably find the 5.0 version you have is ‘Build 33’. The backup applet accessible via the Juno group in the ‘All Programs’ is the very one and same. I don’t really make use of the ‘Mail Assistants’, but you may be able to create one to stop applying other ‘Mail Assistants’ to it as a means to try checking overlap.

Version 6 is simply a program to automatically set up OE to get your mail from their server, nothing more.

Configuring Juno to retrieve mail from any other external POP3 accounts is a great feature, but can only be done when you are using the web connection. If you simply check your mail from the mail connection, it will not work.

The site Juno_accmail List is a place where Juno fans share info and tips. The ‘Message Board’ is the meat of the site and you will see topics of all types from all versions past and present being discussed.
