I can’t turn wifi on in Win10

I bought a 2nd hand ASUS laptop with Windows 10 Pro installed on an SSD. I then connected to my network at home and downloaded some useful software with the intent of giving it away in Uganda.

Now I am in Uganda and I find that the wifi won’t turn on. In settings wifi, i slide the wifi to on then go and check for available networks. The little box that pops at the bottom right of the screen tells me wifi is still turned off and clicking on the wifi settings icon next to the flight mode icon doesn’t seem to have any useful effect.

I can’t give it away if the wifi is not working. I can’t believe I am the first with this problem but I cannot see any relevant topics.

Any ideas? I have changed the power management settings so that the laptop can’t turn wifi off to save power. This didn’t help get my wifi back on.

Connected using Lan or wi-fi ?

Hi. The model is N53S, manufactured in 2011 and originally shipped with Windows 7.

I am pretty sure I connected using wifi, even though I know it would have been quicker using the ethernet port. The laptop does show the home wireless network I use in its history.

Does it have a physical wifi on/off switch?

Check the wifi configuration. Perhaps it is not set to support the type of encryption that is used (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc) or some other setting in your current location.

Check the wireless switch on the right-hand side hasn’t been moved to the OFF position by sliding out of laptop case.

I’ve had this happen several times with similar laptops.

Hi everyone. Yes, it does have a wifi switch. I have never heard of such a thing before. And yes it had been accidentally turned off. So a huge thank you to Paul and Rick for drawing my attention to this fact.  I am so happy and the laptop now has a new home.

It’s just one of those (many, many) things that I’ve learned from prior experience, including a 160-mile round trip to fix something that I now know happens frequently. You just have to learn to laugh about it, even though ‘experience’ sometimes comes at a cost.

Oh well. Then there are the times when that physical wifi switch has a hardware failure of the kind where it becomes unreliable, as in internal state doesn’t always match what it looks like from the outside…

That one was annoying to deal with.
