    Hi Guy’s
I can not shut down Windows 10. From the windows menu “Shut Down” and “Restart” does
not work. Sign out and Sleep does work !

    System: Hp ProBook 11 G2
    Windows 10 Pro Education
    21H2 Build – 19044.1706

    Background and Initial Problem

    Black screen
    RAM checked and ok.
    CMOS Battery ok.

After several reboots I got some beeps – 2 Long 2 Short. Looked them up and they indicated a Bios issue.

I updated the bios which recovered windows 10 so back into the desktop with some issues.
First I can not turn off the laptop using the windows menu.

Note: I have disabled Fast Boot.

If I use shutdown /s it does not work. If I use the /p switch it attempts to shut down with the
shutting down circle on a loop.

I “Reset this PC” keeping personal files did not work.

I then “Reset this PC” removing personal files and settings again didn’t work…..!

    Stumped any ideas guys?

Could the Bios be toast ?

    Thanks D

Are you able to run HP’s hardware diagnostic program after self-test? Pressing escape key might show a menu of options during boot, choose the diagnostics. There is a section for BIOS.

Did you manually check the drive’s file system with “chkdsk C: /f”  for errors? (C: is usually the boot drive, replace the letter if it is different.) Windows may automatically do this task if certain conditions are met.

Is your laptop’s power settings set to never sleep?

Given you’ve reset the PC and ditched the files and settings about all you have left is to get the install media for the OS, default the cmos settings (rather than changing individual settings as the newer version might expect different defaults and option availabilities in the interface can be changed so settings you can’t see of change may still be active), fire up Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) (probably from a Hires disk or similar) and use it to be sure there’s nothing on the drive to influence the installation (and a full write is likely to show drive infirmities..).

When you install remember to go to command prompt of the recovery media first and use the fist script at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/configure-uefigpt-based-hard-drive-partitions?view=windows-11 (which is CreatePartitions-UEFI.txt) to set up the partitions, rather than using some sort of proprietary HP layout as their recovery media can change the boot process to include diagnostics and software which might be part of the problem. Turning on secure boot will enable UEFI to provision its full support to the OS which may help the problem so you might need that off for the DBAN operation (legacy media), and back on before OS install.

If that works then the problem is specific to either your model or your machine (and maybe the boot and nuke or settings change has removed it?) and if it doesn’t then (assuming the HP diagnostics didn’t show anything) you’re left with some sort of BIOS or hardware level problem. If the problem returns, but only after you have installed updates then of course you need to examine what was installed and maybe remove some additions (pnputil may be of use there – minor drivers may not get a programs entry) to see if you can localise the issue.

Hold the power button down for 10 seconds. That will perform a hard power off.
See it it behaves after switching back on.

If that fails I would perform an install over the top – after making a backup. Easy to do and fixes all sorts.
