• I am unable to sign in to Windows 10

Well, I was commenting in another discussion and decided to try signing into Windows with my Microsoft Account and I couldn’t.  I also had discovered that I could not sign into my Microsoft Account from the Apps in Microsoft Office 2019.

I really don’t know what happened.  Windows 10 works fine and Office Outlook and Office Word also work fine.  And I am happy Microsoft no long collects data and I don’t have to go to my account to clear it anymore.  But I don’t know what I could have done to prevent Office 2019 Apps and Windows 10 from connecting to my Microsoft Account.

When I try to sign in to Windows 10 using my Microsoft Account, I enter my account user id and password and then I get this.

    Screenshot-2022-09-10-190807

I set up a pin over two years ago and Windows 10 says it’s done.  But this is not the password it wants.

    Screenshot-2022-09-10-191100

It also doesn’t work with my Microsoft Account password which is also supposed to be set up.

    Screenshot-2022-09-10-192800

It doesn’t work with my local account password either.  I just don’t know what password it wants.

When I first started using Windows 10, I set it up to just open without needing to sign in.  I used this method to set it up for my local account.

I don’t sign in with my Microsoft Account.  Today I just discovered I can’t.  Also, I discover I cannot sign in to my Microsoft Account with Office 2019 apps even if I want to.  Office Outlook has stopped signing in automatically or bugging me to if it isn’t.

I am afraid I changed a setting or something but I can’t think what I did.  I used to be able to sign in to Windows 10 using my Microsoft Account and sign in to Microsoft Account using Office 2019 Outlook.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix settings so I can sign in to Windows 10 with my Microsoft Account and sign in to Microsoft Account with Office 2019 apps.  Last month I was in my Microsoft Account and Windows 10 and changed some privacy settings but don’t think that is the cause.

    Ideas and help appreciated.

PS. Just realized I should say I have no trouble signing in to my Microsoft Account using my Chrome browser.

I’m not on log in screen.  Windows 10 opens in my local account without sign in.  I am afraid to change that when I don’t know what password it wants.  I may really be locked out then.

I have no memory of what my password would have been before I set up the PIN, but I feel sure it was the pw for my Microsoft Account.  When I have sign in to Windows with my Microsoft account that is the user name and password I used.  I never got this window before.

        Screenshot-2022-09-10-190807-1

The current Windows pw is my local account pw but that does not work.  The only other pw is my Microsoft Account pw and that does not work.  And of course, the PIN does not work.

The Credential manager shows the user account was modified 8/24/2022.  I did not change the password then but it is the day after the last time I updated Windows.

Also looked for password in registry.  I made no changes just looked where it was supposed to be and there is no Default Password.  User name is there but not pw.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon and scroll down to “DefaultPassword.”

Ran DISM scan and sfc scan.  Did not help.

Sorry the reply took so long.  I was collecting screen shots and trying to compose this.

        Thanks for your help.

Your inability to log-in to your PC doesn’t stop 100s background services from collecting and sending data to Microsoft, as long as your PC is on and connected to the Internet.

When I try to sign in to Windows 10 using my Microsoft Account, I enter my account user id and password and then I get this.

Have you tried leaving current password blank and just clicking next?

(In case you had previously removed the password by leaving it blank.)

When I enter my user name and password I get the window above.  I don’t recall ever getting that before.  When I skip entering the password I just get demand in red letters to enter password and go no where.

On the sign in window after I enter my user name the next widow offers other ways to sign in and I chose email and got a code but that too only got me as far as the above window which does not accept any password I have been using. And now they don’t work.

I found this which may not apply. It is a problem with an update for Windows 11 21H2.

I have Windows 10 Home 21H2.  But it is similar.

I have resumed updates and restarted my computer in case it might help for now.

Well this preview popped up after I resumed updates before I even restarted my computer.  I know not to install previews and it does not say anything about fixing sign in problems. But here it is,

Found the problem.  Should it happen to anyone else here is the fix.

Check Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant Service status

Ensure that Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant service is not disabled in Windows Service Manager. It should be set to Microsoft default which is Manual – and it should be started. If not click on the Start button.

That’s it.  I do not know how it became disabled.  I did not do it and I can’t imagine changing privacy settings would disable Microsoft Account Sign in Assistant but somehow it became disabled.  I don’t know how it happened.

I set it to manual and started it and I can sign in to Microsoft Store, Office 2019 apps and Windows 10 (probably, I’m still afraid I won’t be able to get back to my local account and decided not to try.)

Thanks everyone for your efforts in my behalf.
